Ugh....geometry challenge for you brains out there

My poor handwriting solution (you guys got me rolling, though)- really drawn out as it's a solution for my Dad next time he has to use it. FYI's, it was a problem to weld a cross beam into a frame using 4" metal tubing.

you mean the diagnal? apprarently it's not. diagonal of 4x4 = sqrt(32) which is between 5 and 6 and the answer is 6.8 something

yea, thats what i thought too... so the square root of 32 would be the answer

Good, you've solved it yourself along with some other people here. I guess the sqrt(32) only works if it's an equilateral triangle? Speaking of equilateral triangles...

How many equilateral triangles can you make with 6 straight lines?

Another method:

sin(a) = 4/x

tan(a) = 40/(62-x)

or

a = asin(4/x) = atan(40/62-x)

Easily solved using Excel with Goal Seek to find 6.815
