Or you could transition to "a few days/hours/minutes" later at some point in time...

24 was entertaining but was notorious for this sort of thing - especially like 2 seasons ago when terrorists broke into the white house.

Guy right out of the African jungle: "I've broken into the White House wireless network and have the locations of all the Secret Service Officers and have control over the security cameras"

Huh.... that easy?

all that is forgiven because i get to see jack bauer torture/kill someone in a unique and entertaining way.

Yea so 555 is at least a valid number that fits. Its not like:
"What was his phone again"
"5555-5555-1"

At least attempt to make the show real is all I'm asking...

That IP address is as valid of a number and fits just as well as a phone number that starts with 555.

You just lost.

Ok lets journey back a couple years to the release of "Fast and Furious" (I wish I could erase it from my memory). Uses apparently too much Nitrous Oxide which then causes the screws to fly off on the undercarriage of his car which then leave a hole in the floor?

Or better yet, he apparently "Fries the piston rings" in his car, yet he is able to drive around in it like nothing is wrong whatsoever.

All I'm saying is that Hollywood needs to give at least half of an effort in its movies/shows. IT was just the thing that popped up right now...

lol @ using fast and the furious as an example

PSA: TRANSFORMERS AREN'T REAL EITHER

I get your rant, but your specific example of an IP address is terrible because odds are only geeks/nerds will give a fuck.

Very true. I instantly forgave all of those hacking instances when Jack bit the guys throat off in order to get away on season...

Lol - There is a difference between movies that attempt to be real and movies which are clearly Science Fiction.

And yes... looking back, perhaps the IP Address wasn't the best example haha ;)

Maybe they can make a special version of Criminal Minds for you OP, an entire season where we sit over the shoulder of a person attempting to perform a righteous hack.

Talk about exciting.

Hey maybe we should make a thread for you where every post is jammed into the first post since you are apparently incapable of reading past that ;)

Welcome to my world, OP. Once I went to law school, law and order and most other court room drama's became unwatchable for me.

I just asked my wife (a fan of Criminal Minds) if she gives a shit if the IP address isn't a valid one.
She said she doesn't, and anyone who does is a fucking loser and should stop watching television.
I agreed.

NCIS is one I get a kick out of. Now, sometimes, with the hacking bits and all, they've got to make it fake to move the story along. Just how it is. But anyway, some episodes, it will be MovieOS to the hilt--high-res images from regular security cameras, funny progress dialogs, science fiction everywhere, etc.. Then, every few tech-heavy episodes, they will have obviously had a writer or two that either knew what they were doing, or researched well, to the point where I start imagining in my head how I might be able to do some of what the criminals did, with an order from Futurlec and/or Sparkfun :).

Then, the next week, it's Hackers again.

OP: they intentionally use impossible IP addresses.

Try going to Medical School. I just don't even care anymore. You can't watch anything (be it tv drama, comedy, nightly news, or basic human interaction) without some overt medical misunderstanding.

It honestly isn't worth it. I've seen plenty of docs that don't even bother trying to correct people when explaining things to patients. You don't want your kid to have a immunization, grand, next.

Being an ER nurse I agreed with everything you said til this point. When a parent gets on that no I am not immunizing my child kick...I tune them out while thinking to myself, you are a fucking idiot.

Part of me wants to say let me expose your unvaccinated child to mumps, and then have you explain to them when they turn 18 how they'll never have children because mommy and daddy wanted to make a social statement and not get you vaccinated...so you got mumps and became sterile. Oops.

Or lets not get a tetanus shot after Johnny stepped on that rusty nail...now he's got tetanus, better hope he has a mild case of it or otherwise he'll end up in intensive care for a month or so, have a tracheostomy, and without muscle relaxants he could spasm so hard he could break bones/paralyze himself. Sounds like fun.

Now would you reconsider getting him that vaccination?

Watching Criminal Minds. Good show, HIDEOUSLY bad IT research...

I can list any number of examples (1 second hacking into random systems), but this just popped up on the TV and, as an IT Security Professional, I almost tripped and fell walking across the room. It went like this:

"What is his IP Address?"
"374.14.12.3"

*Double Facepalm* - IPv4 addresses are broken into 8-bit octets and, thus, cannot exceed 255 in any octet.

Ty for posting this.

Now in the future if I ever feel bummed about whatever, I can refer back to this post and realize that even with my problems, it won't ever be crappy enough where I "almost trip and fall walking across the room" over something so trivial as a fake ip address on a major network television show.

I'm a software developer, and this does not bother me. It shouldn't bother you. At the most, just be happy you know the difference between a valid and invalid IP address while watching television, I guess.

Yes, because the show would be much more entertaining if we saw them go before a magistrate to get a warrant, then spend a few episodes sitting around while their password generator takes a crack at the login info, while the IT guy makes obscure anime joke after obscure anime joke.

The rest of us would have committed suicide to avoid watching, but at least the IT nerds would be satisfied.

Worst offender ever was ST:TNG. EVAR!

OP probably grew up with a crush on every character at some point.

Well outside of that, it also trivializes what a lot of people do for a living.

"Can you hack into the system"
"Yea give me 2 seconds... Ok I'm in"
I couldn't type in a password that I knew that fast, much less break into a system like that.

"It's booted up but there appears to be nothing there... no BIOS, no registry, no Operating System"
I don't know that much needs to be said about that one. Thats just sad.

I can overlook it a lot of times, but sometimes its just painfully bad research.

(As for not using a real IP Address, why not just use 192.168.33.1 or something that is typically a local IP)

Do you think people really want to sit and watch a hacker take days to hack something.. nope the show is only 18 minutes or 40 minutes long (-commercials) they don't have a lot of time to get the story across.. hence instant hacks and instant lab results.. because NO ONE cares.. its not a crucial plot point its just getting the evidence..

because then someone would NERDRAGE that's a LOCAL IP IMPOSSIBLEZ!

either way they lose..
