Ugh, BS charges on the CC bill

I cancelled my DSL account about a month ago. They said return the modem within 10 days and no charge will be applied for it. Fine.

I returned it in TWO days.

A couple weeks later I get a bill for $400. No problem, I'll call them and sort it out. I did, they agreed the modem has been returned, no problem, no charge.

Get my CC statement, billed me anyway TWO WEEKS AFTER sorting it out. Lovely. $400.

I call them, and after getting hung up on twice (I was being perfectly polite) the third guy said it will be 8 weeks before I will get a refund. Great.

I call Citibank to contest the charge, they say they will call them on my behalf but it'll likely still be 8 weeks to get my money back.

What a piss off. Lesson learned, do not autopay with credit cards. They won't help you even when there's BS charges.

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to charge you $100 for the rant as part of the agreement to cancel your DSL. There was a no rant clause.

your CC should actually "suspend" charges while it investigates a charge dispute. if not; get an Amex.

He said no, they don't do that. I don't know if it's only in Canada they don't do this or what...

It's possible. The provisional credit is a requirement by law in the US under Regulation E and Z.

Does the $400 include a contract cancellation penalty or only a modem. Seems pricey for the latter.

It's only for the modem. There was no contract whatsoever.

Wish that was the case, oldsmoboat... I'm not pleased being out of $400 for 8 weeks.

oh autopay is the devils work. I worked at an ISP a ways back and even the head of billing said autopay isn't the best thing... no chance to dispute charges... with regular billing you can bitch and refuse to pay and it gets their attention.

This is why I use my American Express card whenever possible. I just give them a call and they will remove the charge.
