I have a 6 year old Fortron here and with just a fan change it's going strong. So no, I did not say they were bad. I'm just disappointed with all the design effort they put into the GLNs and Epsilons, they let the bean counters down grade it's PSB population.
The guys at badcaps.net were shocked to see the Epsilons with OST on the output side. You see, poorly filtered PSU output works the motherboard and VGA capacitors harder than clean output. Plus OST are known for shorter service life than higher quality caps...OK :)

unless you want to take out a loan for a psu, a pcp&c is not necessary, the single rail is usefull if you have a high end peltier or water cooling system, but otherwise, there are great options that cost A LOT less. sesasonic, enermax, ocz, etc... I already posted these.

That's what a lot of people say, until their $50 special blows up and takes their motherboard and CPU right with it.

It's your money, of course. Mine's on PC P&C every time. There's a lot of talk around here about warranties and support. PC P&C is top notch in both areas as well.

$100-ish is reasonable for a PSU, but for instance This PCPC 510W is over $200. That is getting a little extreme IMO. They seriously don't need to be that expensive to be a good PSU.

You can find good used models for far less than that. I sold a pair of 510W-SLI models for $130 shipped not that long ago.

Overall, yes, they are expensive. But some of the "high end" models that are oft recommended are over $100. And when you are dropping upwards of $2K on a complete new build I think it is foolish to skimp on the power supply.

A used one would be good then, $150 I consider about the max I could pay. For my current rig I spend $89 after the $10 off special on my PSU. So far I've been very happy with it, I've had it since late april. Voltages are spot-on too. GY would tell me its gonna blow up on me, it is an Antec :p

I've used Antecs for a long time now and none have ever had trouble. My brother's computer is running on an antec that is 3 or 4 years old, my parent's PC is on one older than that, my friend's comp is on my old 430W that is around 2-3 years old. Maybe I'm just lucky ;)

I was looking at getting a new PSU and based off of the recommended PSU list, found here, I was considering the Fortron Epsilon FX600-GLN or the FX700. Are you saying there is a better choice in that price range? If so what do you recommend for $120-150.

Thanks

First: Do you really need 600~700W. Only SLI/Crossfire with water cooling might need that kind of omph.

For expensive but VG built with quiet 80Plus efficiency=Seasonic S12 500~600W.

For bargain deal the Enhance ENS-0560G. It will Froogle at $110 but it's 72~76% efficient.

The new kid on the block that looks to be built on the new Seasonic M12 platform is Corsair. Reviewed here http://www.jonnyguru.com/PSU/HX620W/ ATM it lists for $169 but should come down in a month or two.

A good but inexpensive 500W is the Enhance ENP-5150GH. Combined 12V is 30.5A. The series 4 will be out in a month with combined of 36A. Froogle for prices.

Take a look at the Silverstone Element series. http://www.silverstonetek.com/

Thanks for your help. Would 500w be enough if overclock my system a little more and eventually upgrade to the G80? What about the Corsair 520w?

The corsair 520W is a new model so if there are any flaws they are yet to be discovered. However it looks like it's a rebadged seasonic design (good).

No one knows what G80 will need, a 520W should be sufficent.

acegazda, as highly reguarded as the Fortron GLN series and Epsilons are, the
fact remains they use OST on thier output side. OST is known lower tier. Not as bad as
the infamous Fuhjyyu capacitors that will continue to haunt Antec for several years, but
not even close to Teapo, as used by Enhance, PCP&C and many other PSU builders.

Zippy/Emacs uses RubyCon, United Chemi-Con(both are Nipponese) and some small CapXon.

My dad bought a PC P&C Silencer 470W and it's just a modified SeaSonic S-12 with OST caps (yuck). I couldn't believe it. I have a bag full of blown OST caps I've removed from motherboards. OTOH my SeaSonic S-12 330W has United Chemi-Con caps.

Question/update: I fired up the motherboard with an old 20 pin 250 watt psu and just the 2 HDD. I was able to get a few beeps and the message "There is no power connector to your graphics card" flashing on my monitor.

So it looks like the stuff is working?
