[RANT] Why are women so damn...something when it comes to the house. I'm about to go crazy trying to help my dad and his wife get a surround sound setup going but she's such a pain in the ass about it.

The layout of their den area is about 50x50. Not small...This area is all open and includes a kitchen, small dining area, and den. Nothing seperating all that. Along one long wall is a big armoire thing that has their tv in it. 60" Samsung DLP. She didn't really like the way it looks because it is grey and not black like the VCR and cable box they had

$3500 tv and a nice dvd player with it, an upconverting Samsung with HDMI.

A few months later they move to Dish network which gives them a silver receiver, which she doesn't like because it doesn't match the rest of the equipment. WTF?!?

Anyways...fast forward. She is wanting a surround sound system, but doesn't want to spend a lot. Like $400 max. And she doesn't want anything to be seen, has to be really small. And doesn't want to have to run wires for the rear speakers.

Remember now we are talking about a distance in the den from the wall where the tv is to the area where the rear speakers would go of about 30 feet.

And she doesn't want a sub that can be seen. And doesn't a big receiver with knobs and lights.

Ain't gonna happen. Well she doesn't like that answer. I try to explain to my dad, who understands, that it ain't gonna work, for that price because they are wanting a HTIB rig, not something that is pieced together. Arg. I could easily build one that would work great, but not with tiny speakers and a half inch high receiver...

Furthermore, the HTIBs they look at have a dvd player included...just little component jobs. Well why do they need 2 dvd players...get rid of that Samsung with HDMI and upconverting for a progressive component. Makes perfect sense..

Women can be such a pain in the ass with things like that. So concerned about how something looks and what her friends will think. Well it's going to sound like ass regardless of how well it looks. I mean wtf you spend $3500 on a tv but only 10% of that on a surround system?

Am I just an ass? I mean how am I supposed to compromise on a system to those specs...[/RANT]

Oh and another one today...a woman at work sends me a message wanting to know why I sent her an email on how to look younger. All pissy about it because I infer she is old. Just because it has my address in the from field doesn't mean I sent it! I've told you that a dozen times before...

Better have her send the headers of the email to you so you can prove to her that you didn't send the email. She can easily file a harrassment complaint against you.

Look into HTIB with digital amps and small speakers. there ya go.

Oh, and unless you're running 6.1/7.1 there are no rear speakers. Those are surround speakers and are to be placed to the side of the listening position, NOT BEHIND YOU. So unless you're sitting 30 feet away from the TV, you're putting them in the wrong place.

I can't tell you how many people have gone out and spent all this money on home theater only to have it sound like crap because they put the surrounds behind them.

Tell your stepmom(?)/dads wife that you do what you want, and if she doesnt back the fvck off, then she can build it and put it together herself. Then slap her and tell her to bake you a pie, so she respects your authority.

Simply tell her that you have technological limitations to her demand and budget and to simply find someone else to build it. Don't become defensive because if she is unwilling to listen or compromise than she is simply looking for an argument or trouble concerning this. Form can be very important to her (as another post obliquely pointed out); at least as important as the function is to you. So take your frustration and mirror it to her frustration concerning your stance and then back away from the situation preferably without rancor or defensive posturing.

Also, you generalization to women and your frustration with them is amusing and all I can say is pass the remote

I agree that she's being picky but having the color of your whole entertainment system matching is important to many people, not just women. I mean you're spending a lot of money so you should buy something you'll be happy with.

My tv is silver and although I wanted a matching silver tv stand I couldn't find any in silver that I liked so I had to settle for a black one. It looks good but if the stand was silver it would look so much better. Same thing with my speakers, the fronts are black while the center and surrounds are silver. The mismatch does bother me a bit so I'll be upgrading them later so they'll be color and speaker matched.

Women are wired differently in the brain. Less systematic, more enigmatic. Go figure, evolution's fault. Does that make them dumb though? Depends on what your definition of dumb is. Perhaps our approach to favoring functionality over eye-candy sleekness is by them considered unreasonable.

This is why marriage doesn't work. The two can get together once in a while, but living together is a disaster.

As for the disproportionate sound system budget, I'd say the average man is nearly as unreasonable in that regard. Certainly everyone I know in the real world.

Maybe she's just annoyed that you forwarded spam to her?

Regarding your original rant: Women tend to be far more concerned with how things look and feel, as opposed to how things work.

Since you have such contempt for women in general, the answer to your problem is clear: switch teams.

You better get used to it. Girls nest when it comes to homes. Just find a girl that is more willing to compromise and is more reasonable about stuff like this when you get married.

This is a very good idea, OP. Chances are she just doesn't like you, and is trying to find any excuse to complain.

Women tend to be more interested in the look and the finished product, and not interested in the how and why. When you mention the limitations of needing speaker wire, etc., she's about as uninterested as you are when she mentions the vcr not matching with the tv (or whatever, I wasn't interested enough to pay attention). Things go in one ear and out the other if we're not interested. As to why they can be so stubborn and unwilling to accept not getting their way, look how they're treated in our society. Men compete with one another for their attention, sometimes violently. Growing up, they're 'daddy's little princess'. They're used to getting their way.

And I could easily tell her to go eat a bag of hell. I've explained to her before that the address can be spoofed. We have several thousand spam emails a day, I don't have time to prove where they all came from.

I mean I know what you are saying, but no way to defend against everyone of them.

Yeah I know on a 5.1 that the surrounds are on the side, but that would never fly because then they'd have to be on a wall or support column and be "visible". So would have to go behind on a shelf in the kitchen. Ug.

I wasn't mean about it to her, just bit my tongue and said I can't do it. Told dad that I didn't really want anything to do with it from here forward since I didn't want any of the blame when it comes to the final products sound.

And I know how it'll go because my dad had a system once before in my mom's house and they never used it because it didn't sound great, and it was a $1000 Advent system. Not great stuff, but decent. He's hard of hearing so has to turn the sound up loud anyway, no way will he be able to push a $300 system loud enough for him to enjoy it.

Unless he got a Z5500 or something...

Pretty true.

The trick is to find a girl that is more reasonable about things, and will concede points if they have to.

I won't buy components unless they're all black. The inside of my built-in rack is black and no way am I going to shove a bright silver box in it.

Hand in your man card. If it does the job, it does the job, regardless of colour. RACIST! :p

Heh, my parents used to have a black TV and VCR and then the TV broke, so my dad goes out and gets a new one which happens to be silver. And my mom looks at it and acts like its some sort of betrayl that my dad would even consider getting a TV of a differn't color without consulting her (my dad is of course like "wtf does it even matter"), but of course he ends up having to take it back and spend 50$ more on a TV to get one becasue its black. PErsonally I don't even notice the color of a TV, and would be completely fine no matter what color it is, I 100% fail to understand how something so trivial that I barely even notice it is a matter of such emotion to the opposite sex.

Also, anyone who says that men and womes brains work exactly the same should take this as a good example that mean and women perceive the world completely differently.

This thread does not prove (reading this thread) that women are dumb. Wrong title..
