Dude, everyone should have seen it by now.

Couture isn't a very fun fighter to watch, but he gets the job done.
I'm actually watching it right now... I read this thread title right before the Sylvia/McGee fight.

It's a PPV. It ended 2 hours ago. I could care less.
Great. This fvckhead's a wonderful addition to the board.

Here is a brief bio of Randy "The Grandpa" Couture: Couture is a 3x U.S. National Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion, a 2x U.S. National Championship Runner-up, a 2x All-America Oklahoma State Champion, and the 1997 U.S. National Greco-Roman Champion. When you put someone of that caliber up against a very good (in UFC terms) fighter, you will get the same result time and again . And the guy is 40 years old! Tito looked genuinely worried the first time Randy dropped him. Then he looked lost every time they stood up and Randy drove him down at will. Couture is probably the worst nightmare for the UFC: A genuinely nice guy who has nothing but respect for his opponents and then goes to town on their ass. UFC folks were praying that Liddell or Tito would end his run, but as long as Randy stays in this weight class and doesnt go back up to the bruisers at 250 and above, he will continue to ground and pound ayone who they put in front of him.

As an aside, I was watching Techtv's Gametime and they show the UFC tapout games with Tito on the cover. Imagine what the genreal buying public's clamor would be to see Randy Couture on the front cover. Might as well put Tank Abbott on the front of the box.Snoooooozzzze.

I really think that Couture is the best fighter, hell he might even be one of the top conditioned athletes in the world.

THe guy is in such peak physical shape and has such tremendous skills that I think he underwhelms his opponents into thinking that the old man can be beaten rather easily. Oops!

Peace

A Re-Addition. He was ban before for whatever reason and is back again.

I don't know what he was ban for, but I can make a few guesses now.

Damn. Poor Tito. UFC is all the same now. LIke 10 yrs ago it was much better. I remember watching the David vs Goliath series. That was awesome. Anyone remember "Polar Bear"? He was like 6-8 and 300lbs. And he was up against some guy who was 180lbs. The smaller guy won.

Has nothing to do with post count... It has everything to do with your crappy arrogant attitude, jackass. When you grow up, hopefully you'll realize that.

I always said once wrestlers got in the game it would be all over for the strikers. Once they learn some striking skills, learn a few submissions, suddently they are champ material as Randy just displayed.. they just come in, take the guy down, and pound away, game over. I do give props to bjj and other martial arts for taking on more than one opponent where being on the ground is a BIG mistake.

Here is some more info on Randy you might enjoy.

Tito is also a wrestler. I don't really think wrestling beats striking all the time. It's best to have a good combination of both, but thats very hard to do. But there are and were strikers who did very good. Bas Rutten, Wanderlei Silva, Quinton Jackson(rampage). You also have heavyweights like Crocop. Pride's competition is way better, I wonder how good Randy would do in there. Striking is also way more exciting to watch.

Dont forget that Couture fought as a heavyweight for the last year or two. He went up against guys that outweighed him by 60-70 lbs and he was manhandled on the ground. Guys would just lay on top of him and mash their elbows into his face(His eye was injured in one fight earlier this year and he couldn't participate in the "Eco-Challenge" tv show) He had no problem going up against guys far bigger than him, but he just couldnt match their strength. Plus when he would try to strike them, they would grab him and drop him down using their superior weight advantage, plain and simple. On the other hand, when he fought Ortiz, they were exactly the same weight and his skill was far, far superior to Tito's. When you get a pure world class athlete like Couture, who has literally been training seven days a week, 12 hours a day, for the past 30 years, you might get lucky and beat him once in a while, but the odds are severely stacked against you. Crap, look what he did to Vitor Belfort a few years ago. Just beat the living hell out of him. And this is when I thought that nobody could lay a hand on this kid.

Couture should fight Silva somehow somewhere real soon. I'd love to see that.

Silva was has been caught for drugs abuse. He used it after the Ricco fight to 'have a better appearance. He was caught and didn't deny it. He should be banned for a while.

I'd say the best in mma would be Fedor. Awesome guy. But the rules are slightly different and they are use to a ring wheres UFC is use to a Cage. Different.

The better man win's or is unlucky but saying that he should be able to account for most of that himself...

A Junior College Wresler vs. a World class Olympiad? Huge difference like a HS champ vs. NCAA Champ and it showed round after round.... Not all the time.. but I mean, how many champions do we have, that have their base in wrestling? Lindland, Couture, Fedor, Kerr, Coleman, Hughes, Frye, Ortiz...all have wrestling backgrounds...These guys are all champs or former champs. And there are several reasons. Primary being the conditioning level as you eluded to in your next post. Except try cranking the heat up to 95F-105F then you begin training those intensive hours on end roll after roll. Second is they are extremly powerful for thier size due to all that training and cutting weight and have a power mentality which they will to win. Third is wrestlings primary goal is takedowns, so they are experts at it and becomes second nature, and since 99% of all MMA or street fights end up on the mat they are at a huge advantage. Put a monster in there like Aleksandr Karelin and good night.:)

Too bad Randy's 40 or he would do very well in Pride as well.

Karelin? Oh yeah, and watch out all the poseur heavyweights in the UFC! Jeebus, I would love to see someone like him get in there. The man lost what. one fight in his entire career? He would obliterate the top ranks in the UFC.

I think that Couture would do well at Pride if he could pound quickly while he was down on the ground. Do that a bunch of times and maybe he would advance. On the other hand , it seems like these guys try to train "tournament specific" Meaning, if Pride has rules regarding ground fighting, then they train to stand up more, where the UFC tends to let their guys roll around for a while before breaking them up. Big difference there. Plus you have the stupid octagon. I have felt that for the past 5 years or so, they should have gotten rid of that damn thing. Makes it look like a caged deathmatch or something gimmicky like that(Of course that was the whole original intent) Like I said before specific fighting in the UFC involes driving your opponent into the corner and not letting him up. Totally different tactic than Pride. This of course plays into Coutures main strength. But like I said befor, I ve seen him stand up and puch it out with Vitor Belfort and he about killed him, so who knows.

I hate to say it but I think Couture simply does'nt hit very hard. I mean look how many times he hit Ortiz during the ground and pound for 5 full rounds. Granted Ortiz proved he has a chin but Pride rules would work against his lack of punch. Who knows? But I'd never bet against a wrestler.

Speaking about Karelin. Not only is he 300 lbs 6'4" 6% body fat I read he used to pack 500lbs on his body and climb stairs in a 50 story building over and over and run 2 hours in waist deep snow for conditioning:p My god he was/is an animal..I believe he would be unstoppable, especially given the fact that much lesser wrestlers have destroyed all comers in the UFC. A reverse body lift of another squirming 300lb Olympic wrestler is insane, and he not only does it which is unhead of above 120 kg, he makes it look easy. Persanally I think he would scare Silva to death before the match even begun.:)
