UDMA CDRW on VIA chipsets

HI,

There was a discussion here the other day about the Plextor 12/10/32 not working in DMA mode on the Asus A7V motherboard.

I wrote plextor about the problem and got back that they weren't sure about that particular motherboard, but that "VIA chipset is a problem..." The tech then went on to say "VIA recommends you not use their EIDE drivers, but use the Microsoft ones instead with ATAPI CDR drives."

Is this the case for all CDRW drives? Or just plextor? I have an old HP 8110 which doesn't to DMA, but I think that drive is also non-DMA.

If you know of fast CDRW drives that do use DMA on VIA chipset motherboard, could you please list it here? In particular the 12/8/32 and faster drives.

Thanks!

How do you know if it's working in DMA? My Plextor 12/10/32A is running on a KT7-RAID and I've enabled DMA with no problems occuring but how do I know it actually works?

Under secondary IDE controller in Device Manager in Win2k, it says that both my DVD and CDRW are running in DMA mode. My hard drive on the Primary is running in Ultra DMA mode

HI,

It might be difficult to know for sure if you have DMA one. One way would be to watch the CPU usage while reading a large file from the CD drive.

I found that the VIA DMATOOL would allow me to turn on DMA for my HP 8110, but it was lying. The drive doesn't seem to be a DMA drive, and I had stuttering on multimedia playback.

Atroz thanks for the info. On my KA7-100 my Kenwood 72X shows up as UDMA and my Plextor 12/10/32 shows up as DMA-thanks for the info-this question has bugged me since the 1st day I got my Plextor.

BTW I was told by Plextor Tech that in DevMgr when DMA is checked, Disconnect
should be also...ie not just for SCSI. :D
