UDF/CDRW software

A friend of mine has some kind of Roxio CDRW packet-writing software on her work computer. She brings work home on CDRW and needs to be able to read the CDRW, work with the files, then update the changes on the disc.

I have version 3.5.19 of Nero's InCD packet-writing software. Would this be sufficient for her needs? Are there 'better' UDF/packet-writing applications I should consider?

Also, there is no 'disable' option available for InCD so its always in the background unless I kill the process. Will this interfere with the operation of Nero Burning Rom in any way (i.e. can I have both installed, or is it one or the other)?

InCD is incompatible with CDRWs formatted with Roxio Drag-to-Disc (formerly Adaptec DirectCD). You have to use the same software in order to be able to read and write to the discs.

InCD will not interfere with Nero Burning ROM, however, if you install InCD AND Drag-to-Disc you WILL have problems.

Packet-writing would be quite useful if it were standard. I think that will be the case when "Mount Ranier" support ships with operating systems. For example, there is likely a large class of users that finds CD mastering relatively clumsy; at least too clumsy for everyday use. However, in the presence of packet writing, they'd be significantly more likely to backup work on a regular (even daily) basis. Currently, there is no general floppy disk replacement short of the non-ubiquitous (and dying) Zip disk. CD writers are common enough to be the floppy replacement, if packet writing were ubiquitous and easy to use.

This isn't about wasting CDRs, but rather usability; CDRs can benefit from packet-writing just as well.

DirectCD reportedly interops with Windows XP's built-in packet writing. I'd have to double-check, but I don't think the same can be said of InCD (otherwise, interoperability would assumably be transitive).

InCD seems to read the CDRWs just fine....so far. I have not tested writing sofar, but I understand what you're saying about the potential for incompatibility. That's what I'm concerned about.

Maybe she should just get the Roxio software from her IT department. Then the question becomes, can DirectCD/D2D coexist with Nero Burning Rom?

The reason why InCD and Drag-to-Disc (DirectCD) are incompatible with each other is because they use a different file system and drivers. You can read DirectCD formatted discs in any computer, but you need to have DirectCD in order to write to them. Nero and Roxio strongly suggest not to use both of them in the same computer. You have to pick one.

I believe that if you only have Nero installed (not InCD), you could install D2D and use them at the same time... I've never tried it.
