What as the best public school in America? Haas boys median income starting is 145K, ALL the big corps begging for thier grads in any field of study to come work for them? Or as the premier research university in the nation from things as varied as nukes to medicine.

Or do you mean the "rep" of people so far removed from reality who only see progression as a negative? Who cares what they think.

Eh, Berkeley *is* a haven for radicals (remember the strip club as class assignment a year or two ago?) and also one of the top schools in the nation. It can be both.

why do so many of you rank UCI and UCD above UCSB?
comparison of average stats for admitted students:

UCI GPA:3.87 SAT:1189
UCD GPA:3.90 SAT:1240
UCSB GPA:3.95 SAT:1240

All the people I know who got rejected by UCSB got into UCD. I didn't even apply to UCI because I thought it was ranked pretty low. I got into UCD but I'm near sure not going to go there because I've spent almost my whole life in that awful ultra-conventional-but-think-they're-liberal, boring, unfriendly town of Davis.

It goes...

Cal > UCLA > UCSD > UCD > UCI > UCSB > (Might as well start going to a good Cal State at this point) > UCSC > UCR

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/colleg...rief/natudoc/tier1/t1natudoc_brief.php

Yeah yeah, kiss my @ss how this is not an accurate measure but this is what people look at nevertheless. Basically people from Northern California go to UCSB, while people from Southern California go to UCI. Neither have top tier students and neither will ever have the name and recognition as UCLA or Cal.

Okay, as a TRUE NorCal girl, let me just say that Santa Barbara is SOUTHERN California, and most of the people who go there are SoCal folks. Northern California doesn't even start until you hit San Jose. And NorCal people typically go to UCSF, Cal, Chico State, or Davis, if they decide not to leave home. Most of the NorCal people I know couldn't afford to live in UCSB.

Haha okay, Santa Barbara I guess is part of Southern California in a way... not really =P It's much closer here, but no one goes there except people from that small vicinity.

UCSF is graduate/PHD work only.

Meant SF State, sorry. :) Been a long week so far, and it's only Monday.

Why is its reputation necessarily a bad thing?

I'm not sure where you're coming from but regardless, a Berkeley degree speaks to people and employers in a way that a degree from any lower-ranked school does not. You have to acknowledge that in itself.

maybe people in socal don't consider SB to be part of them, but it's certainly not considered nothern california to anyone around the bay.It takes 6 hours to get to LA from my house. It takes 4 to get to Santa Barbara. That's definitely more southern than northern.

by "Haas Boys" i hope you mean their graduate program, because there's no way (and forbes backs this up quite easily) that their undergrads sure as hell don't get anywhere close to 100, let alone 145. Haas is an excellent program, but the big money still lies with the ivy leagues

Does part of that "world reknowned" education include correctly spelling the word renowned?

Easy there Webster, it was was 4:37 am when I typed that. There was a good deal of implied sarcasm that was indicated from "elitist" and on.

But honestly, I justed wanted to know what I missed out on, if anything, out in the land of sun and fun. At times I thought it to be an ideal local, but what turned me off was the combination of high GPA and low SAT scores, from which I got the feeling that it was filled with overachievers and/or the california public school system is too easy.

certain schools just open up more opportunities, but all uc's offer decent educational programs.

UCI is ranked 43rd in the nation for public schools. All the UCs are good. Even UCR~ But i would rank UCI above UCSB..i chose UCI over UCSB ;) UCSB does have a HUGE party school repuation...and its NOT a bad school its good for sure, but i just question why someone would assume it is better than UCI. Better in WHAT would be my question.

oh and "entering GPA" doesn't matter at all my friend. I graduated a 4.2, did crazy sports, lots of extra curricular activies and whatnot, and only last quarter was i able to start getting decent (>3.5) grades (i' ma 2nd year sophmore in biomedical engineering)

Here is how i would see it, although I personally think all UCs have strengths and weakness in different areas:

UCB<UCSD<UCLA<UCI/UCD<UCSB<UCR

But that is relative to UCs....the UC system overall kicks the arse of so many colleges out there

Would you prefer Mesa or Middle Earth? I'm deciding over that right now.

I live in Seattle and people ask, "Where did you go to school?"

Me: "UC Davis"
Other people: "Where?"
Me: "You See Davis."
Other people: "Where?"
Me: "The school about 45 miles east of UC Berkeley."
Other people: "Oh."

At least we beat UW in the rankings last time I checked. :D

You rank UCB as the lowest of all the UC's and UCR on top? 4.2 GPA you say?

guess it depends on what you go in for:

grad school rankings from 2005 us news. top engineering schools:

berkeley - 3
ucsd - 13
ucla - tied 16
ucsb - tied 21 (with john hopkins and penn state)
uc davis - 37
uc irvine - 42

im ee at ucsb. compared to what my brother had to say (ee at ucla, which he hated the program) it seems like our program is better (its been improving over the last couple years, so ive been told). he said he took a bunch of classes that were all the same. 2 of our professors just got noble prizes. i dont know how strong our other majors are.

it is a party school, but you have to know that a bunch of people that live in isla vista (where all the college kids live) are students at the city college near by.

I already graduated, but pick Mesa. You'll probably have a farther walk to classes (especially if you're doing ICS or Engineering as I assume being on Anandtech) but its more fun there.

head over to anteaterfoum. Can't say it's a good site but it's the best one UCI has got. :p
