Big time party school, no doubt about it.

Nowhere close to UCLA however in terms of academics..but a decent school nonetheless.

is this a joke? ucsb isn't even "the next uc san diego/uc irvine"

it's a decent school but it's a 3rd tier uc at best.

ucla/berkeley are at the top...sd and irvine come after them...after those four its arguable where the rest of the other ucs stand

As a general question, how is the general intellect and quality of education provided by UCLA and/or Cal? I would imagine there are a bunch of instaters who do not match up to the caliber of outofstaters who enroll. ( I assume this because I scored a 1530 SAT and had a pretty decent highschool resume, yet was told I had very little chance at Cal and not much more at UCLA)
I've always been curious, as someone who goes to school and freezes their but off walking to class, but is compensated with elitist new england world reknowned education.

You can probably group Davis with SD and Irvine. I'm not sure about their undergrad program but they're not too bad for their graduate program.

I'd rank UCSB much higher than UCI.

I go to UCSB. It's a party school without a doubt, but that's not why I chose it. You don't have to be a hardcore partier to go here. I lived in a scholar's hall freshman year, which introduced me to quite a few intelligent and like-minded people (like-minded wrt the party scene). Instead of getting drunk and carousing, we spent weekends doing a myriad of fun and original things.

As far as academics go, UCSB is constantly improving. I can tell you there are a lot of morons here, but I'm convinced that morons manage to get accepted to most major universities. We actually have a fairly good undergrad engineering department and an excellent physics department. I think we're actually number one in graduate materials (at least when it comes to public universities) and we're not far behind that in graduate physics.

I can't really speak for the humanities. They seemed ridiculous to me, although I imagine they would seem ridiculous wherever I happened to go to school.

There's also something called the College of Creative Studies, which I looked into when I came here. I was thinking about a physics major (and the CCS lower division physics series is MUCH more rigorous than the normal physics series), but decided against it. I'm currently a fourth year computer science major who's staying around to earn a fifth year masters next year.

Anyway, back to CCS. It's full of incredibly bright people, some of whom can be quite elitist about it (but not most of them). The programs in CCS include art, math, CS, chemistry, and physics (there are others, but I'm not sure what they are, at the moment). Unfortunately, not everybody knows about CCS, so a CCS degree is of limited utility when talking to organizations that don't know about it. But those who know of it and are familiar with the program usually have a good deal of respect for it. It's definitely something to look into if you're a serious academic who already knows most of what's taught in the intro classes (although I know a very bright and industrious woman who will graduate with a CCS physics degree and came to school not knowing basic calculus).

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them. Overall, my experience here has been great, but I attribute a large portion of that to the people I know and spend time with.

As a recent graduate of UCLA's EE program, I'd say that you are not missing much. I don't know about the other departments at UCLA, but I would definately not recommend the EE or CS departments.

Good to hear...sort of...
I'm actually an Art & Sciences guy however.

Honestly, so would I. :)

I've always sort of thought of the ordering as:

Berkeley, UCLA, Davis/UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCR. UCM doesn't count yet.

But seriously, don't choose based on any rankings. Go to the schools and see which one fits you best. I didn't even apply to UCLA or UCSD and I turned down Berkeley and Davis to come here.

I chose UCSB due to weather (sunshine almost all the time) and academic flexibility (I had several good options when I came here). It's been a wonderful experience and I'll have lots of opportunities after I get my masters next year. School's what you make of it.

you're biased epsiIon! haha jk i'm going off my own archaic rankings based off of when i applied to college in 1998. :)

it does honestly depend on your field of study. if I were able to chose again I might have gone somewhere else than ucla. i second the previous poster who stated that EE and CS departments at UCLA aren't that great.

if you have a choice between ucla and berkeley for engineering...i'd say definitely go to berkeley...i might even say go to uci over ucla if you want to do CS. Most of the CS majors I know that graduated from UCLA can't program worth sh!t...if they can they are usually the self-taught ones who already knew how to program before they started college. The course load heavily leans toward theory that would most likely NEVER be put into use when employed as a software coder

No one else does to be honest. :p

Well, maybe people who value the atmosphere. Which is awesome at UCSB, not so at UCI.

Both are darn fine schools though.

I graduated Comp Sci and E at UCLA. I used to think the CS and EE depts are UCLA were pretty bad, but my supervisor at work swears by UCLA/Berkeley CS programs. He says the important thing is that they teach you how to think, rather than just be a code monkey. I'm not sure if I'll agree with that. It's true that I knew a lot of CS/CSE people at UCLA that graduated without knowing how to program. Me included :p

it's not even about being a code monkey...it's about learning the basics

what's the point of learning about theory when you can't even code anything? :p

I graduated Calpoly SLO,. definity not a party school. We used to go down to Goleta and party at UCSB on the weekends.

Does part of that "world reknowned" education include correctly spelling the word renowned?

hahahaha i love how in every ranking, not a single person has mentioned UC Santa Cruz yet.

In my opinion, it goes Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Davis, Irvine, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Santa Cruz

Party is cal state chico. I think drugs might even be legal there or at least not enforced to any appreciable degree. Playboy constantly ranks it top five past 15 or so years.

Oh, right... I thought I was forgetting something. IMO, * > Santa Cruz > Riverside. When I went to visit Riverside four years ago, we drove in... and just kept on driving.

Santa Cruz kicks.
IMO most those schools suck because thier location sucks.

Riverside? Hello smog, traffic, 1/2 empty campus.
Irvine? same plus more traffic plus a major transiant/commuting campus feel.
SD? even more traffic.
Davis? Ugliest campus in the ugliest city in the untited states

etc.

I'd order it
Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Davis, UCSB, Irvine, UCSC, Riverside.

UCD graduate. And yeah, the campus is as ugly as sin. But some of the profs were awesome.

Berkley has a way to go to shed (if it can) the reputation that it has created for itself.

It can not be taken seriously as anything but a liberal breeding ground until the attitudes and some of the faculty changes.
