haha... the dorms aren't that small where the monitor size is going to make a huge difference... 19" monitor is fine... leaves plenty of desk space to study... if you're into that of course

just imagine yourself in a single jail cell...
it's about that big.
anyway, if you can put a desk in there, of course, you can put any kind of monitors in there.
the worse case, you go and get yourself a sleeky lcd. :)
i've been to the dorm a couple times, they really suck.

GO BEARS! (sorry I just like saying that :D )

I'm living in Unit 2 Double.

Come and check out my rig (This is what I plan to build this summer with my money from working!)

MSI K7 Master
AMD 1.4ghz
512 pc2100 Crucial Ram
gforce3 64 mb....might just go with a 64mb Pro to save money
TurtleBeach SC
Boston Acoustics 4.1 4800
16x Pioneer Slot DVD
Plextor 16/10/40 CDRW
40 gig IBM

I figure I'll make friends by inviting ppl over to watch DVD's or somethin like that.

I hope you can make friends just by being yourself. Whilest having a DVD player is a great way to spend some Friday or Saturday nights with your floormates, it's no way to start a friendship. Imagine: "Hey baby, I have a DVD player. Wanna be my friend?"

Forgot to ask - what major will you be pursuing? Or do you not know yet? Go to CalSo yet? (If you did, you should have a good idea of what the dorming situation at Unit 2 is like)

By all means, I'm not using the DVD thing to get friends. I'm quite a charismatic guy if you get me talking. I just thought the DVD thing would be a good way to get everyone on the dorm acquainted with one another, plus it'll be something to do on them rainy days.

Not to rag on Cal life, but when I went to Orientation there were too many introverts. If people around me are quiet, I'll make an attempt but if I get no response then I become an introvert.

What aro you going to be next year?

I'm probably going to major in Molecular and Cell Biology.

GO BEARS! Anyways...

Hmm... The dorm desks will easily fit a 19" monitor but you might want to think about when you move out into your own apt.
Thats what no one will tell you about while your visiting. Rent in the nearby vicinities is ridiculous due to the loss of rent control.
Your new monitor will be limited to the size of a desk you buy later and your new room. I only mention this because my 19" monitor just *barely* fit onto my desk with virtually no clearance on top and I belive it already has deformed my desk.

Well, good luck on your move to CAL. Hopefully your not like me and chose engineering as a major. Also, heres some free advice. Never, ever take a class cuz it "sounds like fun". Do a little research and save yourself a lot of everything.

I'll be a third year business major.

Hey, take Music 27, Public Health 14, and Classics 28 to get rid of those breadths - easy enough classes and they're fun ones too.

Thanks for the advice on the breadths! I was wondering what classes to take for those. Which breadths do those course meet?

I'm still not familar with the breadths thing.

Go Bears! I lived in Unit 3 when I was in the dorms. It was pretty fun. Be sure to visit Stern from time to time tho, it's the girlie dorm. :D

If you are in the units, you can definitely do a 19. My friend got a ghetto ass desk in the units though and it swayed back and forth under the weight of the 19 inch monitor. Also, 17 inch and up basically erases any free deskspace for studying. I don't know if that matters to you or not. ;):D

ugggh, Berkeley girls. You ever heard of "berkeley vision"? :Q:Q:Q

I was in Unit 2 Ehrman 110 as a freshman. Now going into my senior year, long gone from the dorms.

The Unit 2 furniture was pretty new in '98, and it should easily hold up to a 19" monitor.

As for the girls... I'm on the lookout for some hot chicks in Engineering, but those are very few and far between.

True but the cute ones are the frosh/sophs. The longer girls attend this school, the less cute they get. I call this the "Berkeley Effect." Wanna prove it to yourself? Find a mildly attractive junior and ask to see her student ID (she took the picture at orientation before freshman year). She looked so much cuter and more innocent before...Now she just looks weather worn.

Unit 2

I lived there last year. It's far enough from class that you won't go sometimes but not far enough so that when you do go, you stay on campus all day and study.

I'm probably going to major in Molecular and Cell Biology.

Puahaha! I hate you already...

Hey Unsickle, what kind of engineer are you? OR let me ask this... Are you in Etcheverry , Soda, Or Davis all day?

Hehe I knew this conversation would turn to girls and its not fair to judge girls by female engineers :D No offense to all the female engineers out there of course.

Anyways there are cute girls here and you might even live next door to a future Playboy model ie. "Brooke Berry". I think thats what she changed her name too.

Know where to look, and don't go out with anyone on your floor.

Dude, there are _plenty_ of cute girls in Berkeley. Granted, many you see across the street may not seem like anything, but when you do see the few cute ones in your 100-person class, you'll be paying more attention to them than to your prof. Walk around Piedmont (Fraternity row) and you might just catch some of the new frosh/soph sorority girls. :)

I dated someone on my floor and it ended pretty crappily. *sigh* Also, all the sorority girls turn into love-handle-having boozehounds by junior year.

True, I'm not gonna deny that I've seen cuties before.

The majors for the cute girls are business, econ, and PEIS. The dorm for cute girls is Unit 3.

GO BEARS BABY!

Nah. I know a cute girl when I see one. OuterSquare: Didn't you xfer out of Berkeley a whiles ago? You haven't seen the new crop of women recently. And during Summer Session, there's quite a few lookers too. (Most don't attend Cal, but surprisingly, some of the girls in my business class ARE Cal students and they are darned cute.)
