I have recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 and im having trouble installing the Nvidia drivers for my 8800GT.

I have opened a terminal and used Sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12.pkg2.run but all im getting with that is cannot open file

Im a Linux noob so any help is greatly appreciated.

no no no no, do not use the driver from nvidia. That driver is only there for distros that do not package the driver up in the OS.

Go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers and check the box to enable the restricted drivers for your NVIDIA card if the option is provided.

Then reboot.

ahh nice one! found it and all working

Only other slight problem i appear to have. My resolution is 1920 x 1080. I have a 26" widescreen monitor but i cannot quite see the top or bottom bars anymore. They are slightly off screen. Any idea how i can get them back?

Go into add/remove programs and find Envy. It automatically finds and installs the latest drivers for your graphics card, even through apt-get.
