I run Ubuntu on my systems as well as XP Pro for gaming. I recently reinstalled and things went fine on the installation of each OS. Upon logging into Ubuntu for the first time though, something odd happened. The updater signaled that it had 44 updates to install, but, when I click the message, the icon, or the links anywhere...I get nothing. It would not update no matter what. I figured it was a "first run" problem and didn't really worry about. I went about my business, then found out I also can not install anything! I downloaded some apps. and upon trying to install them, I get the same problem, nothing happens!

I've read everywhere I could including Ubuntu forums, here, and Linux forums and can not find a "fix" anywhere. Anyone know about this problem or have seen it before?

from command line, type "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" and see if that works/what that says

Did that and it appeared to "get" the updates, but once again, it will not proceed to install anything.....

Didn't "say" anything. It took the command, acting like it was going to update, then just stopped and did nothing. Same thing when I try to do it by clicking the icon or selecting "show updates", or any of the options...it's like it's going to do it, then just stops with no failure message or anything.

So your saying that when you go:
apt-get upgrade

The screen looks like:

you@yourmachine ~# apt-get upgrade

And that is all the output it does and it just sits there with nothing to display or anything, right?
(you can copy and paste out of your xterminal....)

Yes. There is network traffic for awhile (I'm on cable so it wouldn't take long) and then it just stops and sits there. When I selct any of the update or even try to open the update menu inside it just sits there also and nothing ever opens. When I try to install anything, it also acts like it's going to, then just.........nothing ever happens.

try:
reboot then try:
sudo apt-get -f install

Check out dmesg command output and make sure that your file system is ok and hasn't been remounted read-only and things of that nature. Make sure that the file system is not full. Make sure that you can ping all the servers that your trying to pull packages from.

Ok, I'll admitt this first, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to Linux. When I went into recovery and entered what you gave me, it did update the 44 updates. I then went into Gnome though and it was the same thing. From inside the Gnome GUI I can not access the synaptic manager or the update manager and nothing will install.

Like I said, I'm a noob when it comes to this but can usually figure it out by investigating and reading, but in this instance, I'm stumped.
