Ubuntu Linux - a superb new distribution

I got it to work by rebooting... the guide said just to logon/off or alternatively rebooting but it never did it that way

I switched to ubuntu 2 days a go from sarge. Gotta say that I'm very pleased with this. NOw forget all that "superb distro" hype. This is a normal debian system with all debian power. There are 2 important differences, however:

- Ubuntu preconfigures many simple things, like tme sync, which are not really a big deal, but are nice to have around, and can cause grey hair to ppl unaccustomed working with unix systems (like me when I first installed deb)

- Ubuntu's package system seems to be better managed. Debian sid has far too much broken packages. Ubuntu however ha snone, or very little. That's prolly because thei're paid for maintaining their system. The stable ubuntu release (currently 4.10 "warty") has same stability as woody, with security team support, and same tech level as sarge. The Ubuntu beta (currentlu 5..04 "hoary") is no different from debian sid.

Well I finally managed to get a Linux Distro up and running and on the internet without hosing my XP install, so Ubuntu has oen thign going for it with me. But its also ugly as sin. I am not a fan of the color brown, or any other colors that could potentially be the color of the turd. While I am sure I can change the background(although I have no idea how, complete Linux newb)should I stick with Ubuntu as a new user, or are there other distros I should try. I really want to get to know Linux, and quite possiblly do away with windows all together. I have Suse Linux, from novell, from a hot deal here. I have had it installed and running before, but that was back when I had dialup and couldn't get it online. It was snazzy looking, but like I said, I am sure this can be fixed in most any distro, so don't think i am choosing my distro by looks. I just don't know enough about the endless number of distros to choose one.

For me, Ubuntu rocks. Its pretty easy to install, looks the same as Debian's Sarge. Was quite impressed that it picked up my wireless Lan card
Though I would recommened it for a desktop enviroment as its sound, package updates/upgrades are easy. Would stick to Debian Woody as a server based install.
Anywho give it a go if you can, no harm in trying.

Yeah thats cool, so what can i do yo jazz it up a bit, make it look at least a little more appealing.
And also about my mouse. I have a MS Intellimouse Explorer Optical. It has a scroll wheel and a button on the left and right sides that act as forward and back. In Ubuntu, the forward and backmouse buttons don't work, and while I can use the scroll wheel as a scroll wheel. I can't click it and then move the mouse to have it scroll as I can in windows.

I guess I should register on their forums.

Yeah know what u mean about the mouse button assignments, got the same mouse. Not sure how to assgin those buttons system wide. To jazz up gnome i would recommmend going to Gnome Art there are some cool icons, gartoon is pretty good, you can get theme window additions and boot screen loaders.. can customize till yer hearts content.

Sweet i will check that out. How about installing new themes, at least so i can see what they look like. I got to that option in the menus and though I would check out glider. But then it asks me for the location of the theme file, and i don't know where if at all on my system it is.

Man i can't stand this. I know it will take some ime for me to get used to the way linux works and everything. But I have a few gripes, if you can tell me how to fix any of them, that would be great.

1. Why is this using the older version of firefox and how can I update it?

2. When I download something with firefoxs download manager, where does it get saved by default? And is that even the right way to do stuff like that? For instance, say I wanted to get an extension for firefox, does it work the same way it does in windows, or do I have to use synaptic or the apt get thing? One thing in perticular I tried to get was a patcher which supposedly caused firefox to use IPv4 first, so pages loaded faster. Its in the hot deals forum, how do i install it in ubuntu?

3. My Intellimouse optical explorer back and forward buttons don't work, how can i fix this.

4. And to me the most annoying. Again with firefox, normally in windows when i am viewing a webpage and then click into the google search bar at the top right it automatically highlights the text already there, so whatever I type now overwrites it. Ubuntu, or the firefox in ubuntu doesn't do this. Several times I have tried to search for something, only to wind up getting a search for that thing combined with a search for the last things I typed.

As you can see, I have mainly been browsing the net, not too much else yet, but I will get there.


Lastly, my girlfriend absolutely loves ubuntu, since it has several games(or rip offs of those games)that she loves. So she likes it.

hehe wait till you have install ati drivers - oh and to play mp3s you gotta install gstreamer or something like that

I removed ff and put in Mozilla

I am not using the distro anymore - as a casual user (i don't want to setup servers etc) i got tired of command line changing and mod'ing cfg files to do things....

yes, im a linux noob, but I will admit apt-get was nice (liked it better than red hat RPM's from back in the day (ver 7 I think it was)
