ubuntu 8.04LTS issue with Intel GMA 4500MHD

I have a toshiba Satellite pro S300M-2142 with Intel GMA 4500M HD video card.

I'm currently having issues installing 8.04LTS during the install.

After the splash screen where you pick your language and any options, it will show the loading bar. But when the install helper/wizard should be showing up, the screen is all jumbled and impossible to make out.

I have read some other sources, and have tried installing with the safe graphics option, apci=no, and the combination of the two all to no avale.

I have been looking and I'm failing at finding the driver online for the adapter so i can install with a driver update package. Has anyone else been successful with the driver update package with this video adapter and could provide some help as to creating one (yet to find a decent guide elsewhere, and I've never used one myself).

Hmm any reason not to use 8.10 or 9.04? Either way though video isnt that great with gma 4500. I have one, its not horrible but not great either. IE: laptop cant play some flash sites without very bad choppiness. And has tearing in videos, compiz, horrible performance in 3d apps (open arena, tux racer).

Maybe my expectations are to high with linux (im expecting performance equal or greater than windows).
 
I wanted to use 8.04 because its what i'm using on my desktop at work, and i just want consistency. I've tried 8.10 and 9.04 and i just don't like all the flashy fancy graphics, i prefer the simple clean plain look of 8.04. I'm currently downloading the alternate CD (the text based installer) which once ubuntu is installed, I should be able to update the driver myself or have the basic VESA driver and go from there. I'm not too worried about watching videos or streaming flash, i use linux on my laptop because i prefer it for work (no need for putty, and i prefer the TSC client rather than windows).

I'll post back if anyone cares and let you guys know how the alternate install goes.

It probably uses an updated kernel which includes more recent drivers built in- this is why the latest distro is always the best. Ubuntu 9.04 would probably work just as well as Arch (recent Kernel)
 
Agreed Sylvanas.

I just wanted 8.04LTS working since my desktop at work had 8.04LTS for familiarity. I don't care too much for all the extra GUI effects etc that come on 9.04. 8.04 was nice simple and clean, and looked very good as well.
