Ubuntu 8.04 with ATI 4850

I have tried both method 1 and method 2 listed here http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.p...rdy_Installation_Guide

method 1 works and i get compiz and effects but also get choppy video.

Method 2 does not work (for me) and I reboot to mesa drivers.

Has anyone got this to work? Without choppy video?

EDIT: Method 1 and 2 gives mesa drivers. I forgot the first time i just used the drivers directly from ATI and they worked. But gave choppy video. Gonna try that again but may not work because of all the stuff i already did. Wish this thing had an uninstaller

EDIT2: ATI drivers work on both 8.04 and 8.10. 8.10 seems to have a few things i like about it.

Just run ATIs installer from the website. Im running 64bit. Video still not great with compiz enabled... got rid of flickering but some tearing is still seen.

This is why I (and others) don't do Linux. I would love to go to it and get away from Microsoft but it has to work without me needing a PHD in the command line to make it so. I hope you get it to work.

yeah man very true lol. Its hard to get going and even keep going. But the features are great, like compiz and the package manager.

I got it to work, thought i posted this already... but

Just follow the directions on ATIs web page on how to install the linux driver. Its a automated install, but requires one comannd from terminal. Which they tell you. But my problem came up after intalling then updating ubuntu. After i restarted i got mesa drivers a 800x600. But if i select an older kernel at the boot screen all is fine (would love to know why this is happening.)...

I like ubuntu i got a few things install that are really cool. Cairo dock, gmail notifier, various compiz settings via advanced settings manager, other stuff lol. But would like to know how to fix things. Or revert changes that type of stuff.

Phoronix is a good source for linux news and in your case, keeping track of new drivers, what to use (ATIs Fglrx or the Open Source ATI driver) and how to install.

ok cool, I would really like to get sleep and/or hibernate to work. I know my MOBO and/or bios settings are not he problem. I am pretty sure its the video card causing the problem.

Why don't you give Ubuntu 8.10 a try?

Yeah, just upgrade to 8.10, it fixes the problem. I don't see why people are averse to getting the latest version of ubuntu, it's not like it's a whole new OS, more like a service pack or hotfix.

well I was going to. But i read that the 4850 doesnt work on it.

I figured out that sleep doesnt work with compiz/visual effects enabled

i do want to move to 8.10 if everything works. Maybe ill try a test install...

Im also noticing that movies/videos just dont look quite as good as they do in windows/osx. A bit grainy and some tearing.

The 4850 DOES work on 8.10, it was one of the fixes they added to that version.
BTW, if movies and videos don't look as good, you probably need either vsync enabled or a different player/player settings.

got vsync enabled, using VLC had to change video mode to x11 to even get videos to play but they do not look as good. I want them too...


anyway to update to it without losing all programs and settings? Been fooling with this thing for a while to get it setup.

Does sleep/hibernate work with compbiz enabled in 8.10? If not, that sucks. Power management and being able to walk away from a machine and know it will save power in a few minutes of inactivity would be a deal breaker for me.

If you have a working desktop environment already, you can just do a distro upgrade through the update manager.
Otherwise, you can install from the 8.10 cd without formatting, do manual partitioning and use your current partitions, and recreate the current user account.

yep did the second one. Luckly when i first installed i used a separate partition for the /home. So all settings were kept, unfortunately something happen to the permissions and i ended up doing a full clean install. But hey atleast i learned something.

BTW I timed the install and it took 6, 6 and 7 min per install lol. Very fast... intrepid fixed something for me though. The resize windows area are bigger on the windows. Edgy was taking to much precision to find that area.

nope, doesnt work gotta disable it

also if you over clock, cpu scaling doesnt work. Im searching for a solution but so far nothing.

The new user created by the new install probably had a different UID and/or group memberships. If you had just done an in-place upgrade that wouldn't have happened.

I always just use alt+middle click to resize Windows, no need to find the resize grabber thing.

I think that's an ACPI thing. The different C states have a table of speeds so whenever you enter a new C state the CPU goes to one of those speeds instead of what you're overclocking to. At least that's my guess as I haven't been paying much attention to lkml much recently and I never understood the interest in overclocking anyway.
