I am pretty happy with the 9.10 on my laptop, and I don't do anything fancy (yet) - just some word/ppt/excel, browsing on the net, and some XP thru vmware. What is the the general consensus on 10.04 beta 1? Is it stable? Does it improve on any day to day usage?

I did hear about the awkward button placement, which I would rather not have, but also heard there is a walkaround for that.

If I upgrade now, would there be any trouble in upgrading to the full-fledged 10.04 when it comes out?

I know, I've always waited about a week until after the gold release before upgrading. But I've been hearing a LOT of positive pre-reviews of Lucid and has me anxious to try it out. I don't really want to waste a CD on a beta release though (for the try-without-install).

I'm thinking I am going to go ahead and do an upgrade after Beta 2 comes out tomorrow. Especially since I was planning to do a fresh install with the new LTS ( I haven't done that since the last LTS). So I'm thinking I'll do an upgrade now, and then wipe and reinstall after the gold release comes out.

I already upgraded to the beta. I haven't learned yet, but like every ubuntu beta, it's buggy and full of crashes.

Also, I hate the default theme. The dark colors don't look that bad, but they don't integrate well with apps. Seriously, the icon theme and general window appearances don't match the dark title bars, and in some programs text is unreadable due to how the theme is applied. I switched back to human after a few hours of use.

I also switched the min/max/close buttons back to their correct side (the right). It was just annoying, I still use windows computers, I'd rather at least the close button be consistent.

I'm using it on my desktop currently and while it has never actually crashed I have encountered some serious problems.

1. ubuntuone-client by default assumes you are connected to a fiber network and uses all your bandwidth trying to upload god knows what to god knows where even though you aren't really logged in to the service.

2. They made an absurd decision to move the title bar buttons (minimize, maximize, and exit) to the left side, and shuffle the order. There is an easy workaround, but christ, why?!

3. some crucial (for me) dependencies can't be met for some packages I build from svn as the repository versions are ancient.

4. They still haven't properly implemented pulseaudio in a way that that makes ubuntu a decent HTPC option. (none of the devs even have multichannel speakers so they don't really care if users that do have loud scratchy audio artifacts). I'm not sure that will ever be fixed.

IMHO the theme isn't bad except for #2 above. I read some hype about how they have a "world class design team" working on the theme, which as you know is pretty much irrelevant anyway. I'm scratching my head and and thinking "wtf guys?"

I have encountered some online reviews of the release where pretty much all they talk about is the theme and the desktop background. Really people? The default theme is such an insignificant part of the os to me ( I always change it anyway) I see no value in those reviews, and only slightly more value in the efforts of canonical's design team.

My advice: Go for the beta2 tomorrow, and report bugs. Make sure you have a separate partition for /home and you should not have any upgrade problems when the official release comes out.

yeah moving the title bar buttons was an incredibly odd move. That will be the first thing that gets changed back to how it should be. Otherwise, I like the screenshots of the new theme - way better than the orange/brown theme for sure.

sounds like just trying to be different for the sake of being different. Reinventing the wheel is neither meaningful nor fun.

beta two comes out in the next 24 hours. Prob in the next 12. Beta 1 was pretty good for me. But you can't expect a perfect system on a beta. So wait or take a chance. And risk it all, for the thrill of the moment.

I like to live dangerously, so I think I'll update now.

I installed Lucid 2 days ago and my experiences are as follows:

1. I was getting absurdly long wait time when browsing webpages, the fix I found was I needed to go to edit connections and type in my DNS and it works perfectly now. 9.04 did not have this problem.

2. The open/close/minimize buttons on the left! Horrible. So I changed themes to 'New wave' which is similar to default 'Ambiance' (the one with the buttons on the opposite). All is well now, I like the new flashy look of Ubuntu.

3. Ubuntu Software Center. Where did the 1-5 star ratings for programs go? I hope it gets implemented in the final. Also scrolling in Software Center is a bit slow, looks like it could use some GPU acceleration or something. Personally I like the old version.

Apart from those 3 issues I've had it's great. It looks alot more 'slick' than previous Ubuntu releases, more like Linux Mint. All my software is installed and is working fine and it's a pleasure to browse as window transitions and the new themes make it very different to the old brown ubuntu.

A few issues, but to be expected in a Beta. 8/10.

I did an upgrade over the old version which gave me an OpenOffice error ,I had to remove all OpenOffice software before upgrading went smooth ,anyway now on 10.04 Release Candidate,I've moved the max,min ,close buttons back over to the right side.

They did some minor cosmetic icon and colour changes but to be honest I have not seen a big difference over the old 9.10 version, stability is excellent on my PC.

I'm using my old themes from here http://www.ubuntugeek.com/nice-themes-for-ubuntu-9-10-karmic-users.html.

Overall no issues so far,I'm still checking out what is different from the older 9.10 version.

I'd say nay. Just stick with Karmic Koala until the next major. Why would you want to shift to a LTS if you have the upgrade itch?

I can't believe you said that, anyway good reasons why are below,

A new LTS version is usually released every 2 years. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get 3 years support on Ubuntu Desktop, and 5 years on Ubuntu Server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version; we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Btw its a thumbs up from me ,there have been quite a few updates over the lastweek and my 10.04 LTS has been 100% stable ,zero crashes, boots faster then old 9.10 version as well.

No reason why not to give it a try IMHO.

In addition to the above there's really nothing special about the LTS release. It's the same as every other release, but has longer support. I /think/ they generally try to stay away from radical changes on the LTS, but I'm not 100% sure.

They try for more stability and long term solutions. Boring lol
