UBIQUITI AirMax for a house?

Someone suggested getting one of these installed in my 3000sqft home:
http://www.ubnt.com/airmax

It's a new house and I have 100mbps capable ethernet ports in most rooms. How would this compare to 3-4 traditional wireless routers where I needed. Too many blind spots?

The airmax is more for directional PTP links. The unifi series is more for general use wireless service for what you're looking for. You do need the controller software installed on a computer in order to set them up though. For general home use, I think it's over kill but to each their own. If you have jacks in all the rooms, I'd say try just one WAP in a central part of your house and see about coverage. The unifi should definitely cover a 3000 sq foot house as long as it's placed central and the price isn't bad either.

Thanks. We use concrete blocks to build houses here so wireless signals don't travel all that well. I've been quoted around $250 for the systems. I'll need (at least) 4 routers to cover most of the house. I could just get a few $15 routers and spray them around the house. Wife will get upset at the ugliness though. We are 5 users in all.

Well you can get a three pack of the unifi systems on amazon for like $200. Very easy to install, just install the controller software on a computer and load it up, plug in the AP's and get it configured. After that you should be good, even include a POE adapter so you can install right to the ceiling without any ugly wires. I'm not a fan of using a bunch of wireless router's, esp in the number you're needing. I'd say get a good wireless system setup and you'll be good after that.

I'd say get the three pack, get one up and do a walk around and see how the signal strength is and you can see if/where it's weak and install additional ones where needed.

I would look at the Unifis for this. I have one in my house, it's great. For a house that big you could probably go with multiple and setup the controller server. They have a 400 foot range.

Plug the server and POE adapters into a UPS for full coverage even if the power goes out.

Yea the AirMax are highly directional and meant more for building to building links with line of sight.
Your best bet would be a 3 pack of the Unifi controllers as mentioned previously. They can link up wirelessly so you don't have to run cat5 from a switch to them (though they do use cat5 to carry the power to them).
The controller doesnt have to be running all the time, just during configuration. (Its a program that can run on windows).

There's someone on [H] selling the 3 packs for about 185 bucks. Not sure what the rules are about linking to FS/T threads on other forums so I wont link to it but you can do a search there. Probably your best bang for the buck.
