why does everyone want the 128MB version anyways.. the 64MB version IS faster... no games out today can use 128MB of textures.. or even if there is, it has to be at an ultra high resolution with AA on, which the card can't run it at playable speeds anyways...

In case you haven't heard, the 128MB AGP8x cards packaged in these boxes are every bit as fast. They can't legally swap a slower card in there! Yes, that's right: The "official" 128MB card is slower than the "free" one ;)

Why can't we just be satisfied with a nice deal? Why must it be better and better and better still?

I got my 64MB PNY for $80 + tax and it's great. Now I hear *someone* got a surprise 128MB card like a surprise in a Cracker Jacks box and we're all prepared to tear through all these unopened boxes to find a prize too.

Ok, somebody won the lottery, but must we all suddenly have our joy spoiled?
"Oh man, somebody got more cake than me! Me too! Me too!"
Is searching out the elusive 128 worth the time and sense of disappointment? Lets say you spend a day finding one and you succeed, I'm just gonna post a reply that mine had a Ti4600 and then you'll all say "DAMN!" and head back to the store again. :D [Evil Grin]

Just be happy, dudes you can still see your pen1s. LOL!

I'm looking for a 128MB model so I will not have to upgrade when Doom3 is released. Also, I don't need three cards!

It has a blue PCB with heatsinks on both sides. i has a finned HSF instead of the regular PNY heatsink. The UPC code on the card reads

G4TI4200A8B3DO-MAHAA

It boots up as a 64mb 8x 4200. on the PBC is silkscreened Ti4280.

I can get a pic, but no way to host it.

Just received my card today from UPS. I have the same exact card as you're describing here. Same physical description and same model# on the back sticker. Any idea whether this card is good or not compared to the "normal" PNY's other people are getting?

For those of you who bought the card from BB for $79, you can probably go back and do a exchange and ask for the MIR($40 on this card )...I did it yesterday at my local BB, the CSR did it without asking any question......:)

On the rebate, is there a date that the card must have been puchased between. Like no earlier than... 3/10 etc.

"I'm looking for a 128MB model so I will not have to upgrade when Doom3 is released."
that's no guarantee. i've noticed a 20% decrease in framerate in q3 after applying the (necessary to play online) "updates".

"Also, I don't need three cards!"
why get them and rob others of the chance to get in on the deal then?

I don't get it. Are you saying Q3A is unplayable on a GeForce4? :Q

Seriously though, I've noticed that all along. My Voodoo3 3000 AGP with TV-OUT could play the original version at full speed with all the settings cranked up. After the first few updates, it was damn near impossible to play until I eventually upgraded :) Carmack says that the original GeForce 256 is the base-line for this game (Seriously stripped down I'm sure), so I hope a GeForce4 doesn't choke on it too badly. ;)

"Also, I don't need three cards!"

I guess you didn't get my point:

I BOUGHT two, I NEED two. How did I rob anyone? The GeForce3 is what is being replaced and IT is what I don't need. Besides, my local BB had no more without the sticker anyway (I had to PM and drive 3 hours away). Sorry if I made it sound like I was just giving away three cards because I didn't need them :)

"I don't get it." umm-hmm
"Are you saying Q3A is unplayable on a GeForce4?"
i'm saying SOMEBODY said they bought it for DOOM3...
"I BOUGHT two, I NEED two. How did I rob anyone? The GeForce3 is what is being replaced and IT is what I don't need."
"I didn't have enough time to make it to Fayetteville, GA's BB thanks to them. They BETTER still have the
deal tomorrow (I intend to exchange my open-box Ti4200 and pay the extra $9 for one without the
sticker)."
who typed that? the neighborhood cat snuck in the window and did it?
the MAIN reason i didn't buy one was because all the ones on the shelf had that loose shrinkwrap look
people have posted buying those and finding a geforce mx in the box when they walked out...
if i'm still wrong, lmk. guess i will have to print the thread out also to get it right...

and the v3 3000 pci STILL rocks and could play q3a with ALL the updates on fastest on this dell 2100/900mhz @ 87.9 fps (changed it out for a radeon 32sdr pci for gta3)
but it still rocks

Wow, you really know how to make a mess of quotes ;)

I said "I don't get it. Are you saying Q3A is unplayable on a GeForce4?" sarchastically. I'm saying "Why are you bringing up Quake3's current performance when Quake3 performs flawlessly on a GeForce4 no matter what?" and then I'm saying "I understand why and agree: It's because id software has a history of reducing performance with future patches."

Fayetteville, GA IS about three hours away from Douglassville with Peachtree City's traffic in between. It IS where my second card came from and I DID perform an exchange to get it there. As I've said earlier, I have had previous bad luck with open-box video cards (I exchanged an open-box GeForce3 Ti200 which was fried when I bought it to get the open-box ti4200!). I don't even know why you quoted that because there's nothing contradictory there...

BTW, it was an already open-box Ti4200 going back on the shelf. I didn't make another one...

Try looking into the mirror with high textures and lightmap on Q3DM0. It works FLAWLESSLY with a fresh install and performs like total unplayable crap with the latest point release. This is what I was specifically refering to in memory when I mentioned the performance diference and it is amazing apparant. It is the first thing you see in one player mode

BTW, I bought my V3 3000 the day it was available here :)

So will this card work with Doom3 or not? I would drather wait for prices to come down more if not. Why waste $100 when you will be wasting $100+ more within 3-5 months?

8X AGP video card on 4X AGP motherboard solution to instability problem

I'm sure this info I wrote will be of use to someone out there:

Model: PNY Verto GeForce4 Ti 4200 with 8X AGP and 64MB DDR

Problem: Card freezes 3DMark2001SE benchmark test on Windows Me but not on Windows XP on the same (dual boot) system indicating instability on Windows Me operating system.

Cause of problem: Motherboard that is only 4X AGP capable (not 8X) in this case SOYO K7ADA v1.0

Problem does not exhibit itself if motherboard (AGP) drivers are not installed.
Only after motherboard AGP drivers are installed does the card become unstable.

Solution: Even though the mobo is capable of at most 4X AGP with this card,
forcing 2X AGP enables stable use on Windows9x/Me operating system.

I was not able to see any place in BIOS to force 2X AGP so I used the AGP Control Center utility that came with the mobo to force 2X AGP.

I thought it would be better to stay with maximum AGP mobo is capable of and simply uninstal mobotherboard AGP manufacturer's driver but then the card scores 30% less if Manufacturer's AGP drivers are uninstalled.

YES, this video card will work with DOOM III. I have the alpha of it and even though it is slow at times, with monsters somtimes dropping the framerate to 10FPS, it runs smooth the rest of the time. And it is only an alpha, with no optimization whatsoever. By the time the game is released it will be more than playable on a Ti4200, and you WILL appreciate the extra 64MB of memory.
