OMFG this is the most amazing pic of the milky way.. EVAR!
Man I want to go live by myself in a remote area with no light pollution.. just so I can sit out and see this everynight..

everyone of those dots of light is a star or a planet...right?
We are not alone.

no kidding man. and that is only a VERY VERY SMALL number of the total. it is just so huge that it is impossible to comprehend.

space is awesome 🙂

Don't forget Hubble Deep Field either
The pic of the milky way is just ONE galaxy. That pic of hubble deep field shows thousands upon thousands of galaxies in an area that's only 1/5th the size of the moon!!!
Each of those galaxies have several times more stars seen in that milky way galaxy picture.

and people say there's no way for extra-terrestrial life to exist. come on! look at that! there are millions of galaxies out there that have the potential to be exactly like ours, or hell, if not like ours, at least contain intelligent life.

edit: damn, this thread is really making me want to go out with my scope. sucks that its cloudy, raining, and COLD!!

Go to the Grand Canyon and spend the night in one of the cabins near the rim. Go outside about 10:00 pm and look up. Prepare to be blown away. Stars like you've never seen, shooting stars all over the place. We were there in July, unbelivable!!

are those taken by the VLA at Socorro? Anyone has any idea about this?

UBER Hi-Res Hubble Pics up to 324megapixel!

the key word there is bold and underlined

isn't the VLA at socorro called a Hubble too? Just googled and found out it's not. But we will have something that is 100x more sensitive than the hubble.

Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world, I can't even stand it, and it feels like my heart is going to burst.

haha not to be non-hetero but its true. there are so many stars in the sky it makes our problems and worries insignificant.

word.

American Beauty

Thats the only good thing when the power goes out... everything is dark for a while.. no streets lights, etc... its like suddenly we notice just how many stars there are in the sky.... and how beautiful they are

All 2044? That's going to take plenty of DVDs :Q

Eagle Nebula has always been my favorite. The most amazing thing to me is, the tallest pillar is over 9.5 trillion kilometers tall! Our entire solar system would be a tiny spec on that picture.

Isn't that a line from American Beauty?

Somewhere a plastic bag is swaying in the wind...

I wouldn't say a tiny spec. Sedna at it's maximum distance from the Sun is 130 billion kilometers away. But, it's still pretty big and awe-inspiring.
