The 100 million given by the UAE paid for trailers that sit empty and ice that melted on the trucks. Hope they dont ask for a refund.

Who is to blame for that?

charles schumer is leading the charge against it and bush is supporting it.

egads never thought charlie and I would see eye to eye.

I think I speak for the people with common sense when I sum up this whole story in one word: whatever

I don't care if the Arabs control our ports, the more I think about it. Sure, they would love to harm us, sure they would love to see America crumble. But we will crumble from the inside. Muslims and Arabs can't harm us anymore than we can to ourselves.

The $100 million or whatever they gave is for show, but we go appreciate any donations.

These guys from UAE are the same people who produced some of the 9/11 hijackers, who had ties to the 9/11 hijackers, who have ties with al-qaeda and OBL, who have radicals preaching inside of their country producing more future terrorists. But we should not discriminate, right?

Yes, we should be equal in our treatment. Lets make 80 year old grandmothers take off their shoes while we let a 23-year from Saudi Arabia pass by without even looking at him twice. That is fair treatment and we should all be for it.

UAE is rich and not a psychotic cesspool of islamic extremism like many of the countries in that end of the world. I've thought for a while that it was taking the right path, embracing tourism and capitalism instead of bombs and brutal dictatorships.

UAE is far from fanatical

You can wear mini skirts there and drink beer.

I doubt you can do that in Saudi Arabia.
In Saudi you can't even legally practice another religion in public unless it's Islam, afaik!

Yeah, people are slightly overreacting. The ironic part about the argument for port security is that the whole argument over DPW purchasing the ports avoids the discussion of port security.

Port security like a country linked to bin Laden? I love the irony in that pic. 😉

So you trust Fox news?

good for the UAE.

that country builds tons of interesting stuff. the indoor skiing is one.

I believe they are building the "world" resort too and other extremely rich places.

Anywho all this talk about port security is a total waste of time. We have yet to even address that issue. the simply fact is there is currently NO way to check every container that passes through.

strangely a news story about that comes up once in a while. then that's it. no big dicussion. if someone wanted to sneak a nuke through they can easily do so now. it doesn't even require the ports to be owned by an arab country.

UAE donated $100 mil and they made billions.

It was a bribe.

Bribe for what?

The U.S and UAE are friends.

They have the best U.S aircraft in the region which Israel uses as well.

They don't need to bribe the U.S. They get whatever they want and need.

& Israel and UAE have good relations as well. Much better than any of the other Arab nations.

They don't "build" anything. European engineers are the ones designing everything. They just have a ton of money and don't know what to do with it.

Maybe you should look into the country of UAE before you make these comments without knowing the facts.

Their population is less than a million (non-foreign) and yet they are pretty independent on a lot of programs.

For instance they have some pretty advanced military equipment that they have built all on their own.

It sounds to me like you dont know what it is you are talking about and are just rambling on and on.

Do yourself and this board a favor.

$100 million... wow. That's Shaq's salary for 3 yrs., or 1/3 of last weeks Powerball Lottery. Sheet!

Herr Bu$hler is laughing at us.

was UAE one of the countries that they found officials sending money to AQ? i remember saudi arabia being one of them, and a couple more on the saudi pennisula. All this talk about aid for Katrina makes me wonder. I would tell Afghanistan to keep it's money, and Bangledesh too. Not because I don't like these places but because they need the money so much more than we do, even in such a crisis.

I didn't know the UAE was purchasing the ports

I thought a company inside the UAE was purchasing the ports.

If this is how govts work... damn Bush for not pricing Micrsoft OS cheaper! Let's all riot at once. (Everything is Bush's fault.. at least on this forum it is...)

The government was not sending money to AQ.

Their banking system was used to send money out.

Just like prior to 9/11 plenty of organizations in the U.S were raided and closed because they found money being sent to illegal groups.

Same thing happened in the U.S as well. We shouldn't control our own ports. We are dangerous..

Herr Bu$hler is laughing at us.

What 5 billion dollar contract? I have not heard of any mention of any contract/deal.
the US government isn't selling the ports. its some British company that is selling it. the US government's sole role(on paper) is whether to allow the transfer of ownership of ports (or anything else for that matter that it can regulate) within its jurisdiction to a foreign owned company.

the UAE government isn't buying it per se but rather a state owned company is. In my eyes that just one and the same.

one thing has nothing to do with another. besides, i wouldn't trust a foreign state-owned company that is ran by islam fundamentalists.
