U.S. Says New Images Show Iran Plans Nuke Bomb

VIENNA (Reuters) - A senior U.S. official said on Thursday that satellite photographs of a suspected nuclear industrial site in Iran demonstrated its intention to develop atomic weapons, an allegation Tehran dismissed as "a new lie."

A prominent international expert said on Wednesday that new satellite images showed the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran may be a site for research, testing and production of nuclear weapons. Iran denies having an atomic bomb program.

"This clearly shows the intention to develop weapons," a senior U.S. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

He also accused the U.N. nuclear watchdog of suppressing information on Parchin in its latest report on Iran -- a charge denied by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

A top Iranian official said the accusation that Tehran was hiding an atomic site from U.N. inspectors was a carefully-timed lie intended to influence a resolution on its nuclear program being discussed this week in Vienna by the IAEA governors.

"This is a new lie, like the last 13 lies based on news reports that have been proved to be lies," Hossein Mousavian, Iran's chief delegate to the IAEA board meeting told Reuters.

Washington and Tehran have been at daggers drawn since the 1979 Islamic revolution and the present U.S. government says Iran's leadership is "evil" and set on developing nuclear arms.

David Albright, an American former weapons inspector who heads the Institute for Science and International Security think tank, made the allegation about Parchin on Wednesday, though he disagreed that it clearly showed weapons intent. He also said the IAEA had asked to inspect Parchin but had been ignored.

Mousavian said: "They have not asked to see the site, but were are ready to cooperate with the IAEA" if they want to go.

Maybe Powell can go to the UN and point to dirt trails in the desert and claim proof of WMDs? When your credabilty is low, the enemy will take advantage of it. Welcome to the weakening of the US by the neocons.

The UN can't do much about it anyway. At most they'll just slap sanctions. Look at North Korea when it kicked out all the IAEA inspectors. Anything happen to North Korea? Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Maybe Powell can go to the UN and point to dirt trails in the desert and claim proof of WMDs?
or maybe we'll again rightfully act preemptively in the defense of this great nation if the UN is again to spineless to do what's right.

If by "what's right" you mean "kill the Arabs, set up puppet governments and give their oil fields to US corporations", then yeah, the UN is a little skittish on that.

You guys gonna sign up for that war or are you going to sit back and let others do the fighting?

Hmm, maybe it takes quite a lot of spine for the nations of the UN to stand up against US threats and phonetapping? Who knows maybe their nation might be the next one to be "rightfully" smitten by a US pre-emptive strike? 😛

You even need to ask that? People like them always glorify wars, but when the war comes, they sit in their comfy chairs, infront of the computer and post on the net. I mean, you would think the way they justify the all these wars (Not just iraq, but wars in general) they'd be over there fighting in it. But no, here they are, on a message board, patting each other on the back while others die.

Kids love war, they play video games, watch movies, etc. Men know that war is hell and is a last resort. It's too bad reading is so rare and reality TV is watched by the masses.

So take up the offer. Would not take more than one day to get the logistics in place. They offered without any preconditions (unlike Iraq).

Call the bluff. US or Iran - which is right

"This clearly shows the intention to develop weapons,"
- Problem would be the definition of intent.

And what exactly did you preempt the first time?

Bush had better get his goon Regime on over there right away to take care of this clear and imminent threat to the US Homeland! Right now, right away like it did for Iraq!

They certainly wouldn't risk being called hypocrites for not acting on this, now would they?!!!

If Iran wants nuclear fission tech, let them have it. They will be a threat, or they won't, but given how much we can and should really do about it, it is merely a distraction.

Yeah, getting the nation involved in an open-ended conflict which is costing trillions of dollars...great idea guys! Let's ruin our international respect and credibility while we're at it! Lots of people will die, too.

It truly surprises me to see people continuing to support the Iraq war when it obviously was a horrible idea. Why can't you just admit that you were wrong, deal with it, and move on? Let me guess: you think the Vietnam war was an excellent idea in retrospect. :cookie:
