The point being that there are far more human rights violations in Mexico than at the border. If people want to do something, start there before you work on the border if you have to choose one over the other.

My question was rhetorical. He said Mexico should request human rights monitors on the border. Mexico has a lot of its own dirty laundry to clean relative to the abuse of migrants.

No, your question was whataboutism.

You are out of your fucking mind if you think Gaza is a concentration camp. That demeans and waters down the horrible situation that concentration camps were/are.

A place doesn't have to be a death factory to be a concentration camp. It just has to be filled by people whose rights have been curtailed & access to the ROTW has been limited. It also must be maintained by force, something the IDF is entirely willing to do.

Of course we don't have to choose one or the other.

That is such an ambiguous definition that literally any country becomes a concentration camp. As a US citizen I am not allowed to visit every country, and some rights have been curtailed. So...

I find the complaints against the HRC to be unconvincing. While I agree that it spends more time condemning human rights abuses in Israel than it does in other countries with worse records that doesn't change the fact that the human rights abuses it's condemning in Israel are very real. In the phrase 'biased against Israel' the part that US conservatives care about isn't the 'biased' part, it's the 'against Israel' part.

For once in his worthless life Boris Johnson is right. The HRC has issues but it's still a valuable thing to have.
The acronym is the same as the she-beast's initials so of course we have to get the fuck out.

I do love it. I mean, it's not like the US quit the council over human rights abuses in Mexico, is it? Of course not. It's about painting the council as having an anti-Israel bias, as if our Israeli friends don't do a lot to earn the scorn of the ROTW. You can't condemn them for shooting unarmed Gazan demonstrators who get within 100 yards of the border fence or for being extremely repressive wrt the Pals in general. Because... Poor Jews! or something.

Imagine how we'd feel about the Israelis if they weren't Jewish...

If they were not Jewish, I doubt Israel would have expanded its borders. The only reason they were able to, is because everyone around them attacked them, and after they lost, nobody wanted Gaza. Pro tip, nobody wants Gaza now either. Well, except for Israel.

It's been in the works since Trump got elected if that's what you mean?

No. Theres been discussion since the US joined in 2006.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...dy-to-pull-u-s-from-un-s-human-rights-council

The U.S. withdrawal comes as little surprise. National Security Adviser John Bolton opposed the body’s creation when he was U.S. ambassador to the UN in 2006. In a speech to the council last year, Haley called out the body for what she said was its “relentless, pathological campaign” against Israel. She has also urged expelling members of the council that have poor human rights records themselves. Other members include China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

“For our part, the United States will not sit quietly while this body, supposedly dedicated to human rights, continues to damage the cause of human rights,” Haley said at the time. “In the end, no speech and no structural reforms will save the members of the Human Rights Council from themselves.”

Okay, more accurately there was discussion by conservatives in 2006, followed by the US rejecting that position, then ten years of active participation and promotion, then exit. To say that it’s been in the works for awhile because some people proposed it 12 years ago and lost, leading to the US taking a diametrically opposed position, seems like quite a stretch to say the least. It would be like saying the repeal of Medicare has been in the works for awhile because Reagan campaigned against it before it was enacted.

The most accurate way to describe it in my opinion was that the US was an active supporter from the time the council was created until Trump was elected, at which point the US made plans to withdraw. The fact that some on the extreme right opposed it doesn’t change that fact. (And would anyone seriously argue that Bolton isn’t on the extreme right?)

I was simply saying the idea has been floating around for over a decade. Thats all. Its not surprising to me at all, and anyone who reads the news shouldnt be surprised either.

Well I mean the US leaving the UN entirely or blowing the top ten floors off it shouldn’t be a surprise if we are going by dumb shit John Bolton says.

I asked how you'd feel if they weren't Jewish, not for a recitation of past events. What if they were Hindus treating Christians that way, or vice-versa, or any other scenario where the oppressors weren't Jewish? Why do you give them a pass?

Who says I give them a pass. Further, I'm not sure the world gives them a pass either as the west sure seems to be unhappy. Its just that the area is a cluster and most people realize there is not a good vs bad side here.
