One Percenters Drop Six Figures at Long Island Mall

At Americana Manhasset, the salespeople know your closet better than you do. They call designers in Paris or Milan to find the perfect little black dress. They deliver soup when you’re ill.

Situated on Long Island’s Gold Coast, about 30 minutes from Manhattan, the open-air shopping center is one of several American malls that have figured out how to thrive by catering to One Percenters.

Even as middle-class Americans struggle with stagnant wages and demand deals that are hurting discount chains, wealthy shoppers are helping fuel sales at luxury retailers. Total retail sales are projected to grow 4.1 percent this holiday season -- the highest rate in three years, according to the National Retail Federation.

Title edited for accuracy.

As a kid I used to go to that Mall when visiting my Grandparents all the time.

I wouldn't be able to set foot in there now as a 99%er.

Dave you realize that different Malls might cater to different demographics? They might even cater to differences inside the mall. At South Coast Plaza, about 20mins away from where I live. The closer you get to Bloomingdales and Saks the pricer the store's get. There is a really nice sandwhich shop near the main door to Saks. Whenever we eat there the wife and I think it is amusing when you see the ladies coming out of Saks with the salesperson trailing them with the full rolling garment rack of clothes.

Americana Manhasset’s 60 shops sell the priciest status brands -- Dior, Gucci, Hermes, Cartier, Prada.

OK - NYC has these shops as well,.. one in particular has been around since 1837 (Tiffanys) - what is your point OP?

That malls use to be Americana Middle Class? And the idea of malls has been taken away from them?? Be it a strip of shops on 5th Ave, or a strip mall of high end crap - it doesn't mean anyone is encroaching or suppressing anyone,.. over anything. It's a retail store - and rich folks have been shopping at them for quite some time.

If anything, this,..

,.. means that rich people don't know or care to shop around - which again,.. this concept has been around for quite a while.

Trust me, I love to bash the rich, but this is quite a stretch dude bro - tone it down.

In mid-October, Americana Manhasset celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Concours d’Elegance with private car collections from the neighboring town competing for Best in Class/Show. The proud owners were very anxious to discuss their cars with anyone who would listen. The coolest part was seeing these cars driving down Northern Blvd. Oh, and the admission was complimentary.

So don't miss the event next year, dmcowen674. 🙂

Maybe it's because the not-rich Americans find malls a waste? There are PLENTY of bargain alternatives than the mall.

The nearest mall to me is a few years from being a total a ghost-town. The mall didn't say "we're catering only to the rich." The people in mass said "we're not interested in shopping at malls anymore."

Gee, so you think maybe the mall in Century City/Beverly Hills caters to a different clientele than the mall in Compton?

News.

If you think you're outclassed.......you are.

McOwned intimidated by all those rich people in the mall? 😉

Dave I hear if you go to Walmart, they'll cash your check for you for only three dollars.

Assuming you get a job of course.

OP is correct. I am a middle class, white American male. The last time I went into a mall I looked at the price tags and just started sobbing. I turned around and went home.

while smarter middle class people like me went to the mall, tried it on to see that it fits, went home, and bought it online for cheaper + no tax + and free shipping!

Yay for online shopping in other states!

Americana Manhasset has been a boutique high end mall for almost 30 years. If you think it is representative of US malls then you need to quit huffing gasoline fumes.

A high end mall that caters exclusively to well off people? The horror! What's next? Restaurants that charge more than a soup kitchen gets in donations? Please no!
