U.S. FDA aims to cut nicotine in cigarettes; ease e-cigarette rules

July 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration aims to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes while exploring measures to shift smokers towards e-cigarettes in a major new regulatory program announced by FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb on Friday that sent combustible cigarette company stocks plunging.

The FDA said it would extend the timeline for newly regulated products, including e-cigarettes, to submit applications for approval and allow existing products that were on the market as of Aug. 8, 2016 to remain on the market, a boon for e-cigarette manufacturers. (Reporting by Toni Clarke in Washington; Editing by Bernadette Baum)

Interesting.

I didn't see this coming, I was always under the impression that the e-cig shit was about just as bad as actual cigs and everything. Not that I would know since I've never been a smoker nor cared to fully research, but this is definitely major news on the subject since this is from the FDA.

If they can regulate the juice and the power of the coils, then I could see it as being good. But that's not going to stop people from modding their coils to blast giant plumes of smoke, which is no different than smoking ten cigs at once.

Does that affect second hand?

This is interesting, and unexpected.
I haven't seen anything to support e-cigs being as bad as cigarettes (headlines, yes, actual data, no).

Sounds like a ploy to get more tax money from smokers. Let's see, less nicotine means not getting the "fix" they need, hence, smoking more than usual.
More money to the tobacco companies which means more taxes to the government. Brilliant!

Actually it is 100% different.
Vaporized oil/nicotine mix doesn't have the carcinogens you get when you combust tobacco.

The most dangerous thing about the vaporizers is the cheap batteries and recharges which can ignite/explode.

this is good news and the right direction. the more people we get off cigarettes the better. the stupid draconian rules the FDA put on ecigs were 100% wrong.

You did not realize the best quit smoking plan is to switch smokers to e-cigarettes?

Which is stupid for a few reasons:

1) :"Smoking" in the sense of smoking tobacco cigs has long been dead from a marketing perspective in the US. Cig companies have been expanding their market from a global perspective, no real loss here in the US.

2) I never understood why cigg companies didn't embrace e-ciggs more heavily. Everyone who wasn't stupid could have seen it coming - we tax the shit out of ciggs, but we don't yet tax e-ciggs so it's basically a wild-west that hasn't been regulated yet. Ripe market for the taking, but they have been slow to adapt to it.

Kinda like Oil companies with Solar/Wind/Other products. Some are just too entrenched in their old ways to change.

I'm talking purely from a nicotine perspective. I'm pretty sure I'm right that if you increase the power of your vape coil you get more nicotine out of it - similar to smoking multiple cigarettes.

Yes the carcinogenic aspect is not even remotely the same I understand.

Ohh, we all thought you were talking about the carcinogens since those are the bad part of cigarettes.

The nicotine is the only good part, more nicotine = less constipation, more alertness, and more focus.

Nicotine alone is far better than smoking, due to the carcinogens in the cigarette smoke. But nicotine is not what I would consider "good" either.

Nicotine promotes tumor growth:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14651253/

Nicotine helps cancer cell proliferation:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15790591/

Nicotine reduces apoptosis (the self-destruction of cancer cells)
