Alright, so, I have a friend at work who asked me a question that I frankly didn't know the answer to either. He has been in the U.S. for almost 10 years. He is now a Citizen. He has 2 kids that were born in a foreign country. One is 17, and so he wanted to know what that kid has to do to retain his citizenship. Does he have to go through the naturalization thing once he hits 18, or can he do something while he's still binded to his parents? I'm hoping someone in ATOT can help! Thanks!

If the children were born in a foreign country they would have to be naturalized. The citizenship of the parent does not come into play.

Children become citizens upon naturalization of their parents, provided they have green cards I believe...if at the time of their parents naturalization they are minors and unmarried. They do not need to go through the naturalization process.

I remember having to go through it or at least an abbreviated version of the process. Went in, the guy asked me why I wanted to be a US citizen, gave some BS answer, said the pledge to the flag thereby engaging in idolatry, and bam, next thing I knew I was a US citizen.

I believe if the kids are all under 18

If the parents get naturalized, the kids are automatically naturalized as well without them having to go through the process.
