meh, if they really got all pissy because someone stole their hat, they weren't really special.

It ain't the friggin boy scouts where you wear a sash with all our merit badges on it.

?

Considering how hard those men work to attain their positions in the military, I can see why they'd be upset when suddenly a right that was bestowed only on them is granted to the entire organization.

Yes it is. It's an honor they worked hard for, and it shouldn't be handed out to everyone for the asking. Using that logic, they might as well hand out Congressional Medals of Honor for making it out of boot camp :^S

you guys both missed the point. The hat does not make you special. The medal does not make you special. What you did to earn them does. If you did it so you would stand out (which is especially ironic in the military given the emphasis on UNIFORMity) then you did it for the wrong reasons.

This. It's just like people taking the burning of their holy books so seriously they riot. They're material posessions... it doesn't matter.

It isn't a matter of standing out, it's a matter of both internal and external recognition of the fact that Special Forces (and Rangers) are NOT the regular army. Wearing the beret was (and should be) a privilege for those who earned it. That's my opinion and also the opinion of some ex Special Forces guys that I know; they were unhappy when the army adopted the beret.

Maybe next the air force can get rid of the stupid freaken flight cap for the air force. Cause I love having to wear a hat once a week that does nothing to keep sun out of my eyes.

I'm sorry but this is a contradiction. recognition = standing out.

Besides, weren't all the special groups wearing berets STILL seperated by the color anyways? How much friggin recognition do they need?

Well these friends of yours are very seriously placing their pride in the wrong place. It's a beret. Their pride is much more useful being placed in their fellow soldiers, training, and accomplishments.
