U.S. ambassador to Libya killed in Benghazi attack

I expect Obama to apologize to Muslims when he speaks of this. It's SOP to beg forgiveness from them.

Obamas statement
I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.
I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.
On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya's transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.
The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

Hillary
It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the death of four American personnel in Benghazi, Libya, yesterday. Among them were United States Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. We are still making next of kin notifications for the other two individuals. Our hearts go out to all their families and colleagues.
A 21-year veteran of the Foreign Service, Ambassador Stevens died last night from injuries he sustained in the attack on our office in Benghazi.
I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago. He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa, which began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco. As the conflict in Libya unfolded, Chris was one of the first Americans on the ground in Benghazi. He risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started. Chris was committed to advancing America's values and interests, even when that meant putting himself in danger.
Sean Smith was a husband and a father of two, who joined the Department ten years ago. Like Chris, Sean was one of our best. Prior to arriving in Benghazi, he served in Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal and most recently The Hague.
All the Americans we lost in yesterday's attacks made the ultimate sacrifice. We condemn this vicious and violent attack that took their lives, which they had committed to helping the Libyan people reach for a better future.
America's diplomats and development experts stand on the front lines every day for our country. We are honored by the service of each and every one of them.

The only disgraceful one is Romeny.

1. Hes lying out his ass per usual
2. Hes politicized the death of a US ambassador for his own personal political gain. Right wing neanderthals will eat up anything even stuff of total fiction.

If a rep were in office at this time, the dem candidate would do the same. It's politics.

And Obama's would have to improve just to suck at foreign politics.

This of course never happened, with the statement in question made BEFORE anyone had breached the walls of the embassy in Cairo (or anything at all had happened in Libya.)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...-obama-response-to-libya-attacks-disgraceful/

What happened is Romney made a claim that the statement was in reaction to the attack without bothering to do any real research first.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears the statement was made just after the Cairo protest (where the walls were breached) and before the Liyba protest.

I am furious at Romney for politicizing this international crisis while (a) grossly distorting the US Embassy in Eygpt's actual statement (ala Doc Savage Fan's post at #10 above) and neglecting the fact that the US Embassy's statement had not been approved by the State Dept or the Obama Adminstration and (b) crassly instructing the reporters to delay their reporting so it doesn't have a 9/11 dateline.

Face it, Romney is a total neophyte in foreign affairs, and either has no competent advisors or is ignoring them. His gross stumbles in England and Israel were, in the end, harmless. Odds are in less than 60 days he will be back to his financier life again and will amount to little more than a footnote in history. BUT YOU THINK THE GUY WOULD TAKE SOME RESPONSIBLITY FOR, AND CONTROL OVER STATEMENTS ISSUED IN HIS NAME-staements that will endanger American interests and the lives of Americans overseas. His naked ambition has overriden whatever patriotism he has.

Ah, then I apologize for thinking he would. Least his words took the middle ground. Action though, will be entirely missing. All we have are empty words that no one will feel.

Perhaps this attack is a greater call to GTFO of the region. Best thing the world can do is isolate and embargo crazy Islamist nations.

The claim by Romney and some other sources was wrong, even the Wall Street Journal is now acknowledging the statement was made prior to the walls of the embassy being breached.

In the hours leading up to the rally in Cairo, the U.S. Embassy there invoked the First Amendment rights to free speech, but said the film constituted an abuse of those rights.

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims—as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions," it said in a statement. "Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

That stupid women Hilary Clinton just said, "this was an attack by a small group of vicious people. Not the lybian people or the government." LOL, the more things change...

Right now is the time to figure out what the heck happened. I came across something earlier that seems to have been edited out from the news services, but the statement from Hillary about the embassy statement isn't complete, rather it's been chopped and dumbed down. Too bad. I didn't like Hillary in as the First Lady because the took the role of unelected co-President, and was actively participating in the legal aspects of government. We did not elect her no matter who liked her or not. Even so she's a tough daughter of a bitch and there's no two ways about it. Credit where it's due.

As far as the other side goes, Palin disgraced herself again with this. Piece from the Business insider.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin slammed President Obama and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo's response to the attacks on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya, which have left four dead, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday morning, as the calendar turned past Sept. 11 on the East Coast, Palin joined presidential nominee Mitt Romney and other Republicans in attacking the Obama administration's response.
She posted a lengthy statement on her Facebook page, and she decided to open with a joke:
Apparently President Obama can’t see Egypt and Libya from his house.
Her statement then delves into all kinds of attacks. She hits Obama for a radio interview with Miami DJ "Pimp with the Limp" Laz, for the Moody's credit downgrade warning and, yes, for playing golf.
In response to this, the U.S. embassy in Cairo issued a statement that was so outrageous many of us thought it must be a satire. The embassy actually apologized to the violent mob attacking us, and it even went so far as to chastise those who use free speech to “hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” (Funny, the current administration has no problem hurting the “religious feelings” of Catholics.)

But where is the president’s statement about this? These countries represent his much touted “Arab Spring.” How’s that Arab Spring working out for us now? Have we received an apology yet from our “friends” in the Muslim Brotherhood for the assault on our embassy?

It’s about time our president stood up for America and condemned these Islamic extremists. I realize there must be a lot on his mind these days – what with our economy’s abysmal jobless numbers and Moody’s new warning about yet another downgrade to our nation’s credit rating due to the current administration’s failure to come up with a credible deficit reduction plan. And, of course, he has a busy schedule – with all those rounds of golf, softball interviews with the “Pimp with the Limp,” and fundraising dinners with his corporate cronies. But our nation’s security should be of utmost importance to our Commander-in-chief.
And here's how she closed the statement:
If he doesn’t have a “big stick” to carry, maybe it’s time for him to grow one.

Seriously?

As far as the Muslim Brotherhood's take:
A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, of which Morsi is a member, said that the United States should do a better job of protecting Islam.

“It isn’t a matter of freedom of speech,” said Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Gozlan. “It’s a matter of a holy Islamic symbol.”

That makes me want to take a piss on a quaran, and I don't want to hear crap about "those christians" either since I'm in a mood over this one. "Piss Christ" from Maplethorpe was vandalized but if it had been Mohammed there would be a hundred dead.

Frack em.

Burn the flag someone gets offended

Put a cross in urine someone gets offended

Two men holding hands and kissing many religious types get offended

Woman walking down the street looking like a Victoria Secret model religious types get very offended and want to blame her if she ends up getting raped

Gay people wanting to marry, well you get the point,

yet somehow these so called liberals that would defend these actions as rights and free speech all of the sudden when it comes to Islam, they want them to "die in a fire"

why? because he made a film a bunch of grown man cant tolerate and need to kill over?

Who really needs to die?

Like it or not, Islam and the culture within it will not be adopting Western views anytime soon. We can talk all day about the retro aspects of it and why it's contrary to accepted norms in others areas of the world, but in the end it is a static entity with known characteristics. It'd be great if all the muslim fundies would either jump into the 21st century, or just spontaneously drop dead, but of course that's impossible.

What shouldn't be impossible is for religious nutbags like Jones (and those that defend him) to grasp the concept of "cause and effect."
Those people would not have been killed if this cultural outrage hadn't been incited. Jones knows full well his dogmatic campaign of hate endangers Americans abroad. This is exactly the kind of thing we were worried about him creating with his Burn a Koran Day stunt.

I don't consider what he did Freedom of Speech, I think it's closer to hate speech that costs American lives. Jones loses nothing and compromises nothing of his own by NOT inciting this kind of reaction. He can talk about this to his congregation or anyone else till he's blue in the face for all I care, but making a movie for mass distribution is muckraking of another scale.

Anyone who considers their personal views as more important than the lives of their countrymen is a waste of a human being IMO.

I take no issue with Romney because all he's done is look stupid. That hasn't gotten anyone killed, and is far different than Terry's campaign of hate and incitement.
He's using American lives as a medium to stimulate and showcase muslim outrage from the religion and culture he hates. More hypocrisy and idiocy from the "pro-lifers."

Expecting people not to kill others because they're offended is not expecting them to conform to 21st century standards.

Change your avatar. It offends me. If you don't, I'll start killing people.

Why do you incite such violence?

Holy crap, not this again.

There is one way, and only one way to deal with this.

Mass produce, and i mean *mass* produce a couple of interjoined dolls/actionfigures, one of the prophet interjoined with his penis in jesus'es ass while jesus is blowing l ron hubbard while hubbard is fingering the prophet ... Now do mass drop these dolls over the hysteric crowds all over until they stop being fricking hysteric fucktards. And that goes for anywhere in the world.
They seriously gotta take on the "Oh its those nutty americans again, who cares"-attitude before someone starts to take em seriously.

Indeed. He should know that Judaism and Christianity are the only religions allowed to be ridiculed.

/sarcasm

I would prefer him to stop turning a blind eye to the reality on the ground regarding the results of his hate.

I don't consider his religious invective more important than American lives, why do you?

Fuckin' A.

It will be interesting when the entire world is under the rule of the islamic fundamentalists, the progressives who so staunchly defend them will be totally supressed with whatever means necessary. Welcome to arab spring and then a really long winter.

Congratulations. You've found a way to justify almost every heinous act committed by humanity. Now everyone can go out and murder because you can find some offensive act to justify it.

Make no mistake, no matter how big a POS Terry Jones is, there is no deflecting from the fact that people in Libya CHOOSE to murder. No one forced them to do it. Here's the Muslim Brotherhood spokesman quote again.

Tell me, when we disposed of a quaran by the means that a mullah approved of what did we do to justify those murders? Not a damned thing.

I might hate someone with a passion but if I go and kill them because I am offended? What kind of defense would that be? A damned sorry one, and that's precisely what happened.

Jones is a pissant. Those others are bloodthirsty murderers looking for an excuse to kill, and you are making an argument to mitigate their actions. We should have none of that.

I think the last thing we should be doing is abandoning the region to people like this.

The Neocon notion of playing god in the Middle East needs to end. This attitude has wounded 20x as many Americans as were injured on September 11th, 2001.

'People like this', who storm embassies only know one thing - kill or be killed. If we're not willing to deliver that unto them, then wtf ARE we doing? That's right, we're getting our folks killed. 55,522 Casualties so we can sit on their streets and play police in the Middle East. You want to sign up?

What are we dying for? What do we achieve when we play police? Unless we're willing to have a nuclear war with Pakistan to end their threat and terrorist leadership there's nothing really decisive or game-changing about our actions. Sitting on their streets playing police ONLY serves to kill our people. Let THEM police themselves.

Why should we do it, especially when we do it so badly at such a high cost?
