U.N. report says Jenin not a massacre

UNITED NATIONS, July 31 ? A highly anticipated U.N. report faults Israel for using heavy weapons in civilian areas and keeping out medical workers during its assault on the Jenin refugee camp. But the report, due Thursday, says that Israeli contentions that Palestinian fighters used the camp as a base were correct and that Palestinian leaders? claims of the number of deaths were exaggerated.

...The report, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters, accuses Israel of delaying aid and medical help to Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp. And it charges Palestinian militants with deliberately putting its fighters and equipment in civilian areas in violation of international law.

The report draws few other conclusions. But it dismisses Palestinian claims that as many as 500 people died as ?not ... substantiated in light of the evidence that has emerged.?

The report says only 52 Palestinians died in Jenin, as many as half of them civilians, while Israel lost 23 soldiers.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter now. This will stick in no one's minds, only the first fallacious reports of a massacre will.

Where's the outcry about the injustice done to Israel over this kind of reporting? Funny, isn't it?

CNN Asia and BBC World covered it first on their newscasts tonight -- did CNN in the States do the same?

The report criticises Palestinian militants for putting their fighters and equipment in civilian areas in violation of international law.

It also says Palestinian authorities were required by international law to respect human rights and prevent militant groups from engaging in attacks against civilians.
The report puts Israel at fault, diplomats say, for putting civilians at risk.

It said the Israeli army used tanks, helicopters and bulldozers to attack populated areas, causing suffering to civilians "compounded in some places by... extensive fighting".

The report also says curfews and closures aggravated civilian hardship, leaving one in five Palestinians in Jenin short of food.

It cites "cases of Israeli forces not respecting the neutrality of medical and humanitarian workers and attacking ambulances".

Palestinians have really disappointed me now. I've always been one of their vocal proponents.......................................NOT!!!!!!

He's neutral only when Israelis die, or (as in this case) when Israel is exonerated for something. When Palestinians die, or when Israel is accused of something, he throws his neutrality out the window.

I know. I meant to put quotes around neutral but I did remember the

Yup, the moaning of "bias" was deafening. Of course the next time the UN is mentioned, the same Llammas will spout the same inane rhetoric.

The UN people who went over there are the same people whom Israel and others were objecting about? Or were the people who weren't acceptable to Israel replaced?

Huh? To me, it seems that Czar was just saying in short what the official findings of the study were. Palestinians militants hid among civilians. IDF used heavy weapons and prevented aid-workers from doing their job. But there was no massacre. It is not allowed to say those facts? If we are talking about this report, then what's wrong in actually saying what the report says?

I never said that there was a massacre comitted in Jenin. I'v read alot of news articles that hint that there was a massacre but I'v read none that say there was one.
Basicly what I'v belived all this time is that there is the possibility that there was one, not that there was one.

About my criticism on Israel, ofcorse I'm more shocked when Israel does something bad thats because I hold them in a higher ethical standard when it comes to this conflict or just about any conflict. They want to be treated like one of the "west" but they are not acting like it.

They want to be treated like one of the "west" but they are not acting like it.

There's not a single country in the West which is surrounded by enemies and which has enemies within its borders who almost daily kill innocent civilians. While you may have the luxury of higher ethical standards, when the Israelis show some restraint, there are just more bombings.

The key difference is that while the Israelis target Palestinian militants and happen to kill civilians in the crossfire, the Palestinians specifically target women and children. Despite that, people continually take the side of the "poor, downtrodden" Palestinians, particularly those in the press corps.

U.N. report
Who cares, like this means anything?

The same people who were like "OH MY GOD, Israel doesn't want the UN to come in and investigate! They are hiding 1000 dead children!!!", now when the UN reports that nothing happened, say "Who cares, like this means anything?"....

And Nemesis, it's just funny that Czar will come in after we have proven that the Palestinians were lying about the massacre, and just blow that part of the report off and once again engage in Israel bashing.... Must be nice to pick and choose what you want to hear.

Murphyrulez
what are you talking about?
where did I blow this report off?
where did I bash israel?

and about your last line, read the bbc article then read the original thread topic, then see who is choosing what they want to hear

Bias in the press is reporting something you don't want to hear.

Great point kenleung. Must be true of the press too since I got an in depth report on it last night. There were violations but it was not a massacre. Who could not be happy, at least about the latter.

We have been over and over the fact that the Palestinians are trying to terrorists and the Israelis are trying to prevent terror. The aim is the reason for the difference in tactics. If you don't want terrorism, arm the Palestinians so they can fight like gentlemen. You know how rats get when they're trapped.
