U.N. congratulates Afghanistan, Karzai
Wednesday December 08, 2004 (1324 PST)

UNITED NATIONS, December 09 (Online): United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan Tuesday congratulated Hamid Karzai on his inauguration as Afghanistan's first democratically elected leader.
Annan also pledged full support to completion of the agenda set out in Bonn, Germany, which three years ago this month set Afghanistan on the transition to full democracy.

"This election and the recently adopted constitution the president swore to uphold today are two key milestones in the building of a strong democratic state in that country," Annan said in a statement issued at U.N. World Headquarters in New York by his spokesman, Fred Eckhard..

"The Secretary-General wishes President Karzai and the people of Afghanistan success as they take on the multiple tasks of stabilization and reconstruction, including the preparation of the upcoming parliamentary elections," the statement said. "He is gratified by the contribution that the United Nations has been able to make to the process of transition so far."

Following the 2001 ouster of the Taliban regime by U.S.-led forces, the United Nations aided in reconstruction and other efforts before helping to prepare for elections. The U.N.- sponsored Bonn conclave set up provisional arrangements for eventual takeover by a permanent government

He's got his work cut out for him. He is in truth the President of Kabul. Elsewhere, his is a name with no real meaning. Ought to be interesting to see how this shakes out.

What a surpirse that the US front runner won. Need I remind everyone that Karzai has been heavily invested by the CIA over the many years. He was part of Unocal, an oil emporium in the middle east, and was coddled as far back as 1999 to aid in talks with the Taliban to allow a pipeline thru towards the caspian sea.

Didn't see this one coming!

Your point being? The people voted for him...

Bahh, the first few elections in a transitional democracy are always rubberstamps. There's not been time for people to see that an effective opposition can bring about real change. But this is a first step, and hopefully the people of Afghanistan see a certain amount of legitimacy in Karzai's victory.

What matters are the elections to come in the next 20 years. You will see results that could range from what happened in Poland to what happened in Belarussia.

Wow, with opium production WAY up and a natural gas pipeline in the works, things are looking up for Afghanistan!

Hopefully this isn't some useless press release and actually translates to long lived and deep rooted democracy in the Middle East.

And that would be the talks where the US told the Taliban they could get a carpet of gold or a carpet of bombs. The people of Afganistan who are poorer than dirt will never receive anything when that pipeline goes in. US Oil companies will make billions over the years. Everywhere were at in the Mid east has to do with Oil,what a shock.....

My information from Afghan nationals is that this election is something that most feel is irrelevant. A President is an oxymoron. People are loyal to regional leaders because that is part of societal structure in Afghanistan. I wonder if this election is more for us than them.
