U-Haul, Penske, or other for moving truck?

Ryder does one way. We moved my aunt that way. The 24' Ryder truck I drove yielded the most comfortable trip I've done in any vehicle outside of my Grand Prix. It also pulled in 15MPG while it was at it. The U-haul we moved my grandma in dragged down 4MPG, handled like crap, and was generally run down.

...I've also seen a U-haul trailer blow a tire and cause a compact pickup to slide on it's side across 4 lanes of I-5 and smash into the center median first hand. Wasn't a good thing.

U-haul, from my experience, usually has the shittest most run down trucks of any of the competition.

I'd avoid them if at all possible.

Its interesting someone mentioned Ryder as I haven't seen one of their trucks in quite awhile. I do remember when it was just U-haul and Ryder that cruised the highways. Ryder was always more expensive and we never used them. U-haul worked but has never been great for us. One truck decided to start loosing its transmission fluid on the highway and it started to burn on the hot exhaust. We thought the truck was one fire for awhile. They actually sent out some kind of mechanic and that got us home, but that thing was slipping so badly it could hardly reverse up the driveway. We sure were glad to get rid of that one.

Most of the other ones have worked ok, but always something wrong with them. Like the one with the slipping a/c belt which made it hell as we moved in the middle of the summer in GA.

DON"T USE UHAUL!

Agreed.

Last time we rented a truck (for a 250 mile move), we went with Penske and had no problems at all. It's somewhat fun driving one of those trucks, unless there's a crosswind. :Q

I used Penske when we moved just a few months ago. I ended up with the biggest truck they have (26'?) with car trailer, 1 extra day and insurance for around 400. Unlimited miles. The loading deck height is indeed higher then on Uhauls. But its a superior truck IMO. And it does have a ramp so its not *that* big of a deal. The diesel was plenty enough to move the full truck and car except up long hills.

I wouldnt use a Uhaul if you gave me the damn thing.

It doesn't matter. Just go with the cheapest one.

Make sure you factor in all the charges too like one way drop off fees, mileage fees, etc. and not just the daily rental fee.

Damn well does matter. Every Uhaul I've used has been a ragged piece of shit.

I believe we used a (17 foot?) Budget for our move to this house. That would have been the 2nd time we moved in as many months. For the move, I originally had a U-Haul scheduled (for the 2nd move); I had also rented a 17 footer, or so I thought. 17 foot Budget = 17 feet. 17 foot U-Haul = 13 feet + 4 feet of the 12" tall area above the cab. I saw the truck and said "never mind." I'd have had to make additional trips.

I was very happy with Budget. However, I'm a fan of the U-Haul tow behind trailers. All of them have seemed rather solid & pulled well.

Penske or Budget. Never uHaul.

uHaul won't guarantee your truck and you might go to pick it up on moving day and they don't have it.

This is a bold faced lie. Uhaul absolutely does guarantee your equipment when you schedule your rental.

Edit - Also, if you do get a crappy truck, odds are it came from a dealer and not a Uhaul Center. Uhaul Centers are owned and operated by Uhaul, dealers are 3rd parties who rent Uhaul equipment. In either case, if you get subpar equipment, I've seen dealers stripped of their Uhaul Dealer status and and managers fired on the spot for it.

I've used Penske for long move (NC to Chicago) and Uhaul for local jobs, for various...reasons. Uhaul was always a bit more difficult to deal with (scheduling, getting what I need, etc), but that could simply be because of overload.

Both are fine in my experience.

But we hired movers for last summer's move from Chicago to CA. Screw driving our junk almost 2000 miles.

They "guarantee" it, but may not have a truck waiting for you when you come to pick it up. Happened to me, and I will never try to use Uhaul again.

Uhaul has a whole department set up to ensure this doesn't happen. If it does, call. You'll get your equipment. Probably at a discounted price.

I used UHaul when i moved from Pittsburgh to Louisiana. Company paid for the truck. My truck wasn't a POS. The ride was decent, not the greatest thing in the world. In the end, it was not a bad experiecne. Luckily, most of the hills we had to traverse were in the down word direction.

it seems universal that penske > uhaul, but ive used uhaul 4 times (never penske) and ive never had a problem. whatever

i've had both, both are good, but penske trucks are way newer and in way better condition

hell they have bucket seats good ac cd player/radio

the uhauls i've had have had bench seats

I've always used Penske. Every truck I've had from them has been in tip-top shape, with zero problems whatsoever. After all the discounts I could apply, with planned mileage factored in, they've always come out as the cheapest as well.

They seem to reserve the nicest / newest trucks for the long distance one way moves, but I've gotten decent trucks from them for around town as well (although not quite as nice as the one-ways).

Heard lots of horror stories about U-Haul, never used them myself though. They always were the most expensive too. Budget seems decent, although slightly more expensive in my experience than a comparable Penske truck (YMMV).

Rent UHaul only if you know you're not gonna return it on time.

I've rented 3 different trailers from UHaul, for 3 different moves... told 'em it was gonna be for 2 days... they charged my card for the 2-day rental.

first one was returned a week late... dropped off in the parking lot, right infront of the entrance, in a customer spot... not brought to the counter.

second one was returned 2 days late.. same thing... dropped off in the parking lot.

third one was returned 4 days late.. same thing.. dropped off in the parking lot.

No EXTRA charges ever appeared on my card.
Noone ever said anything each subsequent time i've gone back there.
