I'm still debating about what I want to be, computer science or computer engn. I like hardware, but I don't hate programming that much. I'm taking a java class right now and it doesn't seem THAT bad.

I love computer science but I hate the time prioritization that you have to do when taking it... It's very easy to get in over your head because you have no idea how long an assignment will take. You can code for hours and then realise you are doing it all wrong. At least with math you know if you put in the time some stuff will sink in, with comp-sci you have to work harder at it.

My last assignment was to design a 32-bit FPU and it took me 10 pages of VHDL :) Thank-you caffeine ephidrine!

<< okay all you CS major contenders... okay i am first year CS 307... here is my current assignment.. http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/scottm/cs307/Assignments/assignment8.htm LINK look over it.... if that kinda stuff floats your boat, by all means take CS as your major.... i am absolutely going insane now. >>

Haha ..... i was in that class for two weeks.... the mouse and cat program scared me so much to the point which i dropped down to 303e......
Yeah, i am not too ethusiastic about programming. I rather be learning graphic programs such as Bryce 3d, Photoshop, etc. Hope i can atleast survive two years and get into graphics etc.

I don't hate CS. But DAMN I hate Architecture. What B.S...

"The work of DIller + Scofidio is situated between 'inscription' and 'prescription' and architecture of 'description' concerned with the hyper-present. Though description is commonly understood to be recapitulation, passive and uncritical, here, it is employed actively, as intervention. By articulating the culturally loaded spaces of and between surfaces and foregrounding their relations those relations necessarily become disrupted."

"These distortions elicit decipherment in terms of several virtual constructs that allow the house to analogize discourse and call for further elucidation. These constructs are continually motivated and frustrated by conflicts in their underlying schemata and the concrete forms in which they are inscribed."

COMPLETE B.S.

If you hate the programming, quit CS. Immediately. For me, programming is the funnest (yeah, I know it's not a real word) part of CS. Just wait till you get into upper division theory classes..........snooze city.

LOL on the Architecture, That is what I originally went to school for. The students would have to present using those terms, whoever could "bs" the most would get the best grade. regardless of the actual details. But I guess that is true for all fields, got to sell your work.

Question for whoever posted that half complete paint program.. How do I shut this java console off, its not showing in the Taskman list..

I love Computer Science and programming (in my third year now). I love learning (computer) architecture too but I'm not really great at it so I'd rather leave the testing part out :) (no problems in the programming courses though). Some people really do get into CS when they shouldn't though. You have to like to program. Just liking to mess around with the hardware isn't necessarily what you should be like to major in CS (a lot of people who like tinkering with that would be better suited in computer engineering). You also aren't going to do well if you join because you heard "computer people" have nice salaries. They do (well, did, probably will again someday).

I like computer science...I hate my concept course (about computer science) but I love the programming class (kinda easy because I knew it prior to school).

Actually all the technical stuff is great, it's when you get into software engineering : UML, high-level desgin, Requirements Analysis. That stuff is icky!

CS at UT (as I've noticed a couple of you guys are from) is HELL!!! Im in my 3rd semester of it, but it looks like im going to be the only survivor - my two other friends that started with me are quitting. One is going to EE/CE and the other to BIO. And for all you complaining about CS 307 - it used to be taught in SCHEME (a LISP derivative)... it was NOT fun so you should be greatful for that.

My impressions of the major? Less programming than I was expecting and MUCH more proofs/logic/theory. But it is a challenge so thats why I'm sticking with it. You CAN do it, you just need to pay attention in class (yes that means actually go) and struggle through the programs.

I tried and did not do well as a CS major. The only CS for me is counter strike. I then switched to econ and hoping to get into marketing and retail of computers. I still wonder why more people on these forums don't work in some sort of retail field.

Lemme just say one thing.

WTF DO YOU EXPECT?

Think about it. "Computer Science". Do you expect to be playing Q3A and chatting on AIM, MSN and ICQ? Of course you'll be doing mad programming. You go there to learn how to program. If you don't know that, you shouldn't have even considered signing up. Find out before registering! You should not be surprised when you go to your first class!

that's why i'm a MIS major :D

hey kpxgq, new major for you can be MIS or CIS (name varies depend on your college), still computer related but not as much CS courses :D
