It doesn't always do this, I think perhaps only after I reboot. I'll enter a url into the address bar of IE, hit enter, and the cd drive will spin up and scan whatever disk is there; depending on what disk is there, the delay before I can do anything else on the computer varies -- is there some switch in win98se to stop this?

Thanx.

thats basically caused because of how IE was integrated into the File Explorer so pretty much theres not a whole lot you can do but live with it. It is typically the same with all the later OSs as well

I've never had that problem myself nor have i heard alot of poeple complaining about it. Is there a cd in the drive when it spins up? And what cd is in there when it does or doen't it matter what kind of cd is in there?

My system does it too - type the URL, and as soon as I hit Enter, then it does it. Sucks because I have 2 optical drives - it insists on checking both of them; I can't seem to find any pattern to it.

Yes, if there is no cd in the drive, then it won't attempt access. If there is a driver cd, it will return control in less than a second, but if it's a cd-r then it takes much longer. There has to be a way to disable scanning it until I ask for it.

Try

1) Update your IE to newer version. This might resolve it already.
2) Install newest serverice pack for your OS (for WinXP, Win2K, or Win9x from Microsoft).
3) Just a wishful action, take out CD/DVD everytime when shutting down your PC.

Good luck,
