typing this from a dvorak keyboard

Well, this is my first time typing on a dvorak keyboard and everything feels weird!

this took me 4:42 to write.

I learned Dvorak about a year ago, it's one the best things I did, I can type so much faster on it than QWERTY. Keep it up and soon that time will be coming WAY down.

And I'm assuming that's just under 5 minutes, not 5 hours.

Is it possible to know both? I'd think knowing one would mess up knowing the other one and vice versa. Kevin do you ususally use a dvorak? What's it like when you go to the library or something and try to use a qwerty?

Yes. I can type at least 135wpm on both (more on Dvorak, but I've never tested). It's almost impossible to know Dvorak and not QWERTY, as I often need to use someone else's computer.

If you have the Dvorak configuration on your machine, you can think of it as a superficial security mechanism. Not many know Dvorak, and the ignorant wouldn't know how to change back!

I heard that the first typing machines had the key layouts in alphabetical order, and because people typed too fast and got the 'arms' of each key meddled, the manufacturers changed the layout to qwerty. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

I don't think it's true, but am not certain. I speak from experience when I say that the QWERTY layout does NOT help against jammed arms with old-fashioned typewriters

yes in QWERTY you rarly type two keys that are next to eachother. the "er" combination seems to be one exception.

Because of a more efficient arrangement of the keys, allowing one to make often used character combinations more quickly.

maybe not for touchtypers but definatly for hunt and peck operators in those days

I tried DVORAK for awhile. It's tough. Especially since I just re-assigned the keys on a QWERTY board through software.

Yes, I really use Dvorak, and no, it's not too confusing to know both Dvorak and QWERTY. I can make the transition without any pain, it's pretty seamless. The worst part is when you are in the middle of learning and you can't type in EITHER because you get confused!

I actually made little stickers to put on my keys, and I used those until I learned it, then took them off... so it's great security b/c it looks like a QWERTY layout but if you start pressing letters all you will get is garbage.

It took me about 3 months to really get it hammered out, but I love it.

I remember getting a Dvorak typing program when I was 10 for QWERTY.

The original qwerty keyboard WAS specifically designed to eliminate
the key arms from sticking
The dvorak keyboard is definitely the way to go
It was scientifically designed to have the most common letters on the home row
Now on the home row we have seldom used letters
...especially if you are not a touch typist already
That is the next thing I want to get
Supposedly it is not that hard to switch back and forth once you learn dvorak
I believe there are programs out there to help you learn dvorak easier as well

Well, let me clarify that 3 months thing... I was up to a decent speed within a few weeks, but it took me a while to get to the point where I was noticably better on Dvorak than qwerty. Some people could probably learn a lot faster than me, though, I know it takes me a long time to do this kind of stuff. Certainly in a month I was good enough it was no longer painfully slow.

Also, I was switching back and forth between qwerty and Dvorak a lot, between my home PC and other computers, so that may have had something to do with it, but I also did want to ensure that I didn't lose qwerty in the process.

That is just too weird, I really never knew that other layouts for keyboards were out there. I am gonna have to stick with QWERTY.
