Typically, what should one's 5.1 speaker volume be set to?

I just realized that my speakers are set to half, according to Windows Control Panel Audio Properties, but NVIDIA NVMixer indicates they're on full, including the woofer.

I have my Windows Audio Properties Master Volumes set to half, as well as the NVMixer's.

The Logitech Z5300's are adjusted as I like. Usually, at 1/4, 1/3, or 1/2, and the woofer is set as low as it'll go, but it still sounds too loud when playing music.

Winamp is set to 100% volume.

Mid range is set slightly above the middle, bass is just below that, and treble is set just higher than mid range.

I've adjusted the speaker and woofer volumes to half. It sounds better, but I'm still uncertain of what's optimal. There must be some kind of rule of thumb with this kind of stuff.

The isn't any optimal, it's all personal preference.

There's the sound level that comes out of your soundcard which is affected by winamp's volume level and your windows audio properties. Then the powered speaker will take that sound and ampliphy it. I'm not certain what controls your Logitech's have, but usually speakers have a surround, master volume, and a sub woofer volume.

I personally find that I change my settings based on what kind of music I'm listening to. I usually like a blended base with my mids and highs, although some people, really like to thump their base.
