Tyan Trinity 400 S1854 and max processor choice?

Mobo board,

I have send the following email to TYAN.com in relation to selecting a processor for my TYAN
Trinity 400 S1854. It has been at least 9 days and still no answer from the company for
my questions.

Can you help?

Robert Richard.

*************************************

Hello,

I have no problem with my mobo card, I just need to choose the correct PIII
CPU. I want to get the max speed for my mobo.

This is what I have on my motherboard:

"99PONA" & the large "M" in the centre of the said large white box on the
mobo.

Can I fit the «Pentium®III Coppermine FC-PGA 370 processor» on the above
mobo? Does it matter if the PGA is in there? In reality, I just want to know
if this processor will fit on my mobo. The new processors on the market are
identified by the above and I don't have a clue what it means.

I have ask my retailer, they can't answer this question. I have given them
these links to your web site for specs on the processors
http://www.tyan.com/support/html/pentiumii_iii_ppga.html , still no luck to
determine if the above processor will work on my board. My retailer says
that the 850Mhz would fit, but the rest of the chart is very hard to understand
and not precise enought to make a decision on the 1Ghz.

I want to get a 1Ghz on my board. Crossing my fingers that you will answer
my question.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

"PIII 933MHz to 1GHz support applies to S1854 board revisions with marking "99PON" and have motherboard revision marking of J or above". Your board marking suggest that you have one of the newer ones.
FCPGA can fit in PPGA sockets its just the voltage that matters. PPGA are 2.0v compatible whereas FC-PGA core volts start from 1.50V. Most motherboard makers solved this issue by bios updates but Tyan seems to have forgotten this mobo. The first generation boards (e.g. BX and Apollo133 were very sketchy in supporting newer FC-PGAs). However it was solved with newer generation boards. I have found that the socket is not as good as the Slot 1 and if you get the FC-PGA P3 then get a slotket (e.g. Abit) and use the slot 1 instead.
SO I think you should be OK.

Thanks for detailed reply.

I never thought of getting an answer for my query.

«...FCPGA can fit in PPGA sockets its just the voltage that matters. PPGA are 2.0v compatible whereas FC-PGA core volts start from 1.50V...»

So, not being a mobo guru, I would just have to set the voltage in the Bios or on the board and I could use the 1Ghz processor suggested by Tyan, the socket? Per Tyan chart for my board, my slot 1 can go up to 1Ghz, max. would be 866? To reach 1Ghz, I would have to use Slot 1?

«...Most motherboard makers solved this issue by bios updates but Tyan seems to have forgotten this mobo...»

So, Tyan never updated the Trinity 400 to solve this issue, like mine?

«...I have found that the socket is not as good as the Slot 1 and if you get the FC-PGA P3 then get a slotket (e.g. Abit) and use the slot 1 instead...»

In the current year, I was thinking of buying the Abit VP6 Dual Socket, the Pentium®III Coppermine FC-PGA 370 1Ghz would fit on this board: reason I wanted to invest in this type of processor.

For now, I would rather like to upgrade to 1Ghz.

In my last reply.

The following line should had read:

«...Per Tyan chart for my board, my slot 1 can't go up to 1Ghz, max. would be 866?...»

If you use a SLOTKET then you do not have to worry about future upgrades to the VP6 (the Slotket transforms a FC-PGA socket CPU into a Slot 1 format for it to fit in the Slot).
Like I said Tyan has not updated the bios on this board for a long time so getting a higher speed cpu (maybe P3-933 and higher) may or may not work. The reason is that it is being phased out (discontinued) for newer models.

Maybe I don't know what is a Slotket, it is not the same thing as a Slot1?

No it is an adaptor (FC-PGA to slot 1 adaptor) - sells for $10-20. MSI and ABIT carries the best.

Thanks again,

So the SLOTKET would permit me to transform the FC-PGA socket CPU into a Slot 1 format for it to fit in my Tyan Trinity 400 Slot, why do you recommend this SLOTKET? Yes, the socket would fit in a later upgrade to VP6, the board uses dual socket.

The Tyan http://www.tyan.com/support/html/pentiumii_iii_ppga.html page recommendations for cpu seems to indicate that I have a more recent version of the mobo, thus having no problem in using the 933 to 1Ghz, socket version? As you had indicated earlier, I should be alright.

Coming from experience, I built several PIII 933 FC-PGA systems on the S1854, with no problem. Just make sure
you have the most up-to-date BIOS and decent memory, and it should be an extremely stable system with
average to good performance compared to other systems with the same processor.

As for the Slocket adapter, I didn't use it and the systems ran fine... there may be a performance increase, but not
a change in stability.

Thanks for kind reply and information provided.

One last question, would the 1Ghz work fine with the 1854?

Also, my board looks recent enough to accomodate the top cpu, have you read my specs found in the initial posting?

Does it match what you had?

Thanks.

Never tried the 1GHz, that was right when they came out and none of our customers were that rich.

Make sure the heatsink is on well, and be careful not to damage anything you can't afford to replace.

Also, make sure that if your version of the board has the Socket/Slot jumper, it's set to Socket. Yours
should be new enough that it won't matter, though.

Anything else you need to add, feel free to do so.

Marvelous.

Appreciate all replies.

Really did not think I would get all the supported received.

Just to throw my 2 cts in here, I am running an older ver of the S1854 so I had to use a slotket in order to go to a 1ghz coppermine cpu. My sys is teamed up with 256mb of cas 3 ram, and a GF3 TI200 leadtek vid brd. I was running unstable until I reverted back to the ver 1.00 bios, all ok now. Your newer mobo may like the ver 1.07 bios so try that first when you install your 1 gig cpu. Hey doodoo happens, just use a step by step approach and put 1 new component in at a time, or else !!! Good luck, and happy upgrading. ronach

Thanks for your approach.

You card was older than mine, if so, my board should take the 1Ghz no problem, with minor tweaking if any?
