now, i have no idea what kind of case or psu i would need, the target location does not have a rack or anything.

it supports non-ECC as well... doesn't it?

? 128-bit dual channel memory bus
? Eight 184-pin 2.5-Volt DDR DIMM sockets
- each CPU controls four
? Supports up to 16GB of Registered DDR
? Supports ECC/Non-ECC type memory modules
? Supports PC3200 / 2700 / 2100 / 1600 DDR
? Supports Single/Dual/Quad-Rank memory

will the cpus support it?

Sorry, registered RAM. Registered ECC is about the same price as Registered anyways.

k... i found a pretty good price on a OCZ ECC Regsitered 2x512 bundle...

and actually i think the 242s with the bundle will likely be retail... though they don't indicate on their site

I would reccomnd you get 2 of those sets so you can run in dual channel.

I was under the impression that the server bundle included two Opteron 246 CPUs of the tray variety, i.e. bare CPUs w/o heatsink and one year warranty. Does anybody have a good suggestion for a heatsink for use in a large tower case? I was thinking about using a couple of SP90's.
