I have been trying to trouble shoot a problem with a Tyan Tempest 5400PW, it turns on fans spin and there is hard drive activity but no video, tried swapping ram, video cards etc.. still nothing.
I took the two CPU heat sinks off to see if the CPU's were properly seated and discovered there was a bent pin on CPU socket 1. I looked under the CPU and could see a brown spot where the bent pin would have touched that likely caused a short.
I was able to clean the spot on the processor and painstakingly straighten out the bent pin with a needle and a magnifying glass. I then reinstalled the CPU and the heat sink, but it still would not post. Next I tried pulling it again and booting with just CPU 2 and got a red light under CPU 2.
Now I am thinking CPU 1 is fried and I was going to drop CPU 2 in to socket 1 and try to boot again next. However before I go any further anyone know when a CPU fries does it damage the MB?
No sense in taking chance on frying another CPU if I am going to need to replace the MB.
