TX Residents: Do you crack your car windows?

So I've been hearing some stories where car windows have started to crack from all the pressure that builds up inside a car during a hot TX summer.

At first I didn't think it was possible, especially taking into account the AC vent system with outside air selected allowing more of an air flow when things start to heat up. Also, these days cars windows are pretty damn strong and it would take some serious pressure combined with a completely air tight car to start cracking the windows.

Anyone have this happen to you? or have any insight on it? Thanks!
 
No, and I park mine in a Park-n-Ride lot. I noticed the car next to mine yesterday had the windows cracked about 3 inches or so.
 
My windshield got chipped awhile ago from a rock and now when I drive in the heat it rubs together and causes the crack to grow. Not good.
 
95 F... Feels like 109 F. :Q

I love Houston.

But as it's usually very humid, I don't leave my windows down a lot. I don't want all that moisture in my car. My car (my old car) was silver, so it didn't get as hot inside as it could, and it had a bangin' A/C anyway.

I'm going to get another, but it looks like it might be gold.
 
If I cracked open my window, it would to try to cool out the insides a little bit. I dunno how effective it is, but i just don't question it.
 
If the window has a chip in it, then a really hot day can make the chip turn into a crack. Since cars aren't air tight, then there is no way that a build up of air pressure could cause the windows to break.
 
Just to clarify, I'm not asking if you leave your windows open to make it cooler once you get in, I'm asking if you leave them open while you're away to prevent the glass from breaking b/c the interior is air tight and the air expands as it heats up.

and spacejamz, I saw your thread, but I didn't think it was along the same lines.

cars are not air tight, so why worry?

living in austin or just visiting? I go to UT, but now i'm working in los alamos for the summer - can't wait to get back.
 
Even though not in TX (NV), I leave them cracked about 1/2 inch. Allows the heat build up to release.

More comfortable to get into and operate the vehicle.
Less humidy out here, but more heat/sunlight.

Might be heat related but highly doubt it was because of the psi build up in the car
 
The pressure inside the car is not likely to cause them to break. I remember reading stories about how theives used to BEND the GLASS back in the 3rd Gen camaros so they could reach in and unlock the doors. Now, technically the glass wasn't bending, the frame was, but, still. They could hold up to a lot of movement.

Besides, your car isn't air tight. If it was, then maybe pressure could build up inside, but, the air would escape through various seals long before the change in pressure would cause the glass to break.

OTOH, it's possible the glass could break from changes in temperature, like, if a rainstorm came in out of nowhere and the water was real cold. Still, I don't think the odds of that happening are very high.

/all speculation but I've never heard of such a thing so I think someone's been pulling your leg with their reason for leaving the windows cracked.
