Two Vista Performance Problems

I have installed Vista Ultimate as an upgrade. I know its better to do a clean install but I just didn't want to start reinstalling the world unless I had to. There were a few bumps getting it to install but finally got it up and running with not too many problems. I am left with two performance issues that I just can't seem to overcome:

1. IE7 - It is SLOW! I have disabled the anti-phishing and defender stuff which has sped things up somewhat. But if I bring up Ebay for example, it will take IE7 5 or 6 seconds to render the page but Thunderbird or Opera take 1 second. Some pages are worse than others too. I have tried adjusting the pop-up blocker as well but although I am able to turn it completely off, I am blocked out of making changes due to security (how? I am clueless).

2. Start Menu. I have set indexing to do only my documents and programs and I have the start menu options set to not search anything. Yet still if I click on a folder in the start menu, it can take 4 or 5 seconds for Vista to expand the folder.

My system is a 3.4Ghz P4 with 2 gig. I get a 4.4 on the Vista index. Everything else seems to run fine. Is this just the way Vista is or something because of the upgrade or ?????

I have seen several posts with problems with P4 systems and Vista lately. You might try turning off AERO.

Right click on desktop
click personalize
click Windows Color and Appearance
click 'open classic appearance properties for more color schemes
(you might choose something other than AERO)

That would be something if it was Aero that was causing it. The desktop seems to run fine though.

I will give it a shot this evening though!

Tools | Internet Options | Advanced Tab | Hit the 'reset' button.

I defrag all the time. I also moved the page file to another physical drive.

Ok got home and tried a few things.

I tried "Tools | Internet Options | Advanced Tab | Hit the 'reset' button" - no change. IE7 is still noticably slower than Firefox or Opera. Sometimes, it is 4 or 5 seconds slower.

I tried turning off Aero. That did seem to make a difference in the Start / All Programs menu. I don't understand why as the rest of the Aero graphics are quick. I will have to fool around with this some more and try it again. Not sure if it was a fluke or really changed things.

Wow that works. It did fix the start programs problem. Slowly I am adding things back till I can hopefully tweak it so that I can have the most enabled and still have quick response.
