two very simple math question

#1. A product costing 60 cents per unit to produce had been selling at the average rate of 1,200,000 units per month. After the product was improved, sales increased to an average of 2,000,000 units per month. However, the new product cost five percent more to produce. If the manufacturer's selling price in each instance was 75 cents per unit, what was the manufacturer's added profit per month with the newer product?

my answer is $20,000, but why the answer is $60,000??


#2. In a certain department, 15% of the females and 25% of the males are working on a project. 60% of the department is female. What percent of the department is working on the project?
 
.60 x 1,200,000 units (u) = $720,000 c (cost to produce)

.75 x 1,200,000 u = $900,000 s (sales)


.63 (the 5% increase in cost to produce is .03) x 2,000,000 = $1,260,000 c

.75 x 2,000,000 u = $1,500,000 s

Then, $900,000 - $750,000 = $180,000 p (profit) originally

$1,500,000 - $1,260,000 = $240,000 p on increased sales and cost

Therefore, $240,000 - $180,000 = $60,000 added profit per month

First month 1,200,000 were sold at $0.75 totalling $900,000 net. However, it cost $0.60 to produce, costing $720,000 total. Subtract $720,000 from $900,000 and you get $180,000 profit.

Second month, 2,000,000 were sold at $0.75 totalling $1,500,000 net. However, it cost $0.63 to produce (because manufactuing went up 5%), costing $1,260,000 total. Subtract $1,260,000 from $1,500,000 and you get $240,000 profit.

$240,000 (Second Month) minus $180,000 (First Month) equals $60,000.

What year math is this?

Before improvement:

cost: $720,000 (1,200,000 units x $0.60)
revenue $900,000 (1,200,000 units x $0.75)
profit $180,000

After improvement:

cost $1,260,000 (2,000,000 units x $0.63)
revenue $1,500,000 (2,000,000 units x $0.75)
profit $240,000

my solution is using Bayes rule (probabilty)

let W be the event that someone in the department is working on a project
let F be the event that someone in the department is female
let M be the even that someone in the department is male

P[W] = P[W|F]P[F] + P[W|M]P[M]

so that equals:
(0.15)(0.6) + (0.25)(0.40)
= 0.19


but there should be a easier weay.

just toss in a number.

Assume there are 100 people in the department. any number works since youa re looking for a percentage. Very easy when you look at it like that.

Yeah, me too. Look at it like this.

60% are Female, so 40% are Male. Use 100 people total to make it easier.

Of the 60 Women, 15% are on the project -> 60 * 0.15 = 9
Of the 40 Men, 25% are on the project -> 40 * 0.25 = 10

10 + 9 = 19.

19 of the 100 workers are on the project or 19%

First, convert all of the percentages to decimals, it makes them easier to work with.

15% = .15
25% = .25
60% = .6

.6 x .15 = 0.09

.4 x .25 = 0.1

.1 + .09 = .19

Convert it back to a percentage, and you'll find that 19% of the department is working on that particular project.

therefore 40% male........... assuming no transvestites la de da 😉

let females = 60 15% of 60 is 9 females
males = 40 25% of 40 is 10 males

total 19 people in dept. working on project.

100 total in department

19%
