Two things that completely piss me off over N.O

1. It's stupid to build a city below sea level...

N.O was never orginally built below sea level, nor is the entire city actually below sea level. The city; like many in the surrounding areas are built on swamps, that have slowly sunk below sea level. The Netherlands for example, is entirely below sea level. There is no way to completely be safe from Natural Disasters.

2. The people in N.O are at fault for not leaving...

Everyone that says this is just applying this to themselves, yes there are some people that do have family in other states. That have money to move to a hotel or drive across country. It's much more difficult to leave if you have a family, I have a family of six and all my relatives are in Fargo. No one understands how much money and time it takes to relocate, even if its temporary. Another thing no one seems to understand how many people there are, you can't just move 700,000 people. Let me repeat that Seven-Hundred-Thousand People, do you have any idea how many indiviuals that is?

3. It's all Bush's fault...

I have yet to ANY solid evidence that it's somehow Bush's fault, or the Mayors, or FEMA... People are going to make the situation political, deal with it.

Thats my 2 cents...

NO has always been below sea level. However parts of it are sinking.

I still believe they should have left. The city provided 500 buses for them, many chose not to leave. The entire metro area is 1.3 million folks an estimated 900,000 left the area.

I dont think its bush's fault for the poor response. I do hold Lousiana Governor, and the NO mayor, and the FEMA director/manager responsible.

Bush should have come off vacation two days before the hurricane hit. The President and FEMA were rather slow to get moving on what was going to be needed.

It is stupid to build a city below sea level and then protect it with levee's but we also build cities on areas prone to earthquakes and then rebuild when they are destroyed.

How can you only hold democrats responsible? Its not really about dems/reps its about who F'd up. Well the State and Locals screwed up and the Feds screwed up. So I dont really see whats democrat about that.
 
1) It's stupid to build a city AT sea level. It's true that you cannot be completely safe from Mother Nature but it's pretty foolhardy to pretend she's forgiving.

2) Clearly, SOME people are at fault for not leaving. At least some portion STILL refuse to leave.

As for the blame game, Mayor Nagins +/- Gov Blanco ordered a mandatory evacuation but essentially failed to plan/provide for poor people to leave.

Days after the disaster Chertoff and Brown were still unaware that tens of thousands of people were at TWO central locations WITHOUT food/water.

Bush didn't see it coming and didn't really care. His travel plans were made to AVOID bad weather which makes it abundantly clear he was out-of-the loop . . . per norm. Despite the fact that any and virtually all aid should be welcomed he's decided to put "agendas" over people. Cowboy Bush was claiming we wouldn't ask any government/NGO for help at the same time Rice was busy asking countries/NGOs for help . . . well everybody except for Cuba.

Katrina . . . climatological/meterological.
Desertion of the poor in LA, MS, AL . . . sociological/economical.
Failure to prudently plan for and expeditiously respond to such a disaster . . . political/economical . . . idiocy.

What's so funny? Bush issued the emergency because Rove advised him to for image, after it had already been issued by local officials. Has nothing to do with "caring".

Well, we've had Fund-A-Mentals blame the hurricanes on gays and abortion. Today I read that a South Korean woman blamed Katrina on the US invasion of Iraq.

I guess it's all about perspective.
 
My biggest problem with the hurricane has been the crap about lack of help. I understand that many people were/are still in NO that were/are not getting enough help. However, there are HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of people who have left who are being very well taken care of. I have family in Louisiana and have know of several hotels, parks, and places of business who are giving everything they can to these people. A zoo in Texas opened its gates, free of charge, to all evacuees, feed them free of charge, and even opened the gift store, also free of charge, so that their children can have toys to play with. I understand that many people are suffering and that this is a major problem, but when are we going to start giving credit to those that are working so hard to help. I don't see many reports on these types of locations. I think we really need to start letting people know how much IS being done for those people instead of just how much ISN'T being done.

1) Many cities are built below sea level. This is not something new, using your theory California, Japan shouldn't exist. (high risk)

2) Most of the people who didn't leave didnt have the means to, besides...I doubt they would be any better off if they had left.

3) Of course it isn't Bush's fault.

Myself I don't believe discussing the problems FEMA had, and the issues some of us had with the presidents lack of attention to the issue in the beginning in anyway impacts the efforts of those who are making sacrafices to help those who have been affected. My concern is that we have made all these changes to FEMA over the last couple years and it's apparently amounted to nothing of value. If FEMA isn't going to be worth anything then we should just disband the damn thing.

Frankly the Hurricane season isn't over, NO and the gulf coast could easily be hit by another cat 5 before the end of the season. Changes need to be made immediately and only through public discussion of the issue will those changes ever be made.

Whether most could not leave because they didn't have the means is conjecture.

Regardless, the people who didn't have the means to leave should have been provided public transportation in accordance with the NO disaster plan.
