During 2006, AMD's integrated memory controllers will shift over to DDR-2, the next-generation memory technology currently being ramped in the marketplace. Although Intel supports the technology with its latest chipsets, AMD has taken a conservative approach to the memory transition.

In 2007, however, AMD's desktop PC platforms will shift again, to DDR-3 memory as well as the second generation of PCI Express, which has yet to be ratified as an independent industry standard. Intel developed the first generation of the standard, but has since pulled back to allow others to push it forward, with only one vote in the PCI Special Interest Group, according to Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for Intel, in an interview on Tuesday.

Short life for the M2(that's the name right?) socket? one/two years... Or can they make DDR-3 memory controlers on the new socket?

thats not a very short life. besides, we've had S939 for a really long time now, and they are just cutting off production of S754.

Yes, honestly, I don't understand why AMD should go to M2 (DDR2) if they will go to DDR3 (M3? lol) right after that. AMD could push 939 a bit more, skip M2, and move to DDR3 in 2007. That's just one more year. I wonder why they never want to change their plan about going DDR2, which will last only about a year.

Oh,now I get it, but do you think they can make CPUs for 3 platforms? They keep the s754 for Sempron, but now what? Sempron=S939, and A64s for M2 and the DDR-3 platform? God, the ratings the ratings...

Err, not to mention Opteron/Mobile platforms

Given that DDR3 won't be released any time soon, and will likely cost alot more, AMD have probably made the right choice to go with DDR2, especially considering DDR2-1000 modules will be released soon.
As for socket changing, we don't yet know whether M2 was designed purely to be used with DDR2, or whether it will work with DDR3 also.
Remember, it's the memory controller that needs to be updated.

My S939 X2 4400+, DDR memory and AGP graphics are going to ride out the socket M2/DDR2/PCI-E combo, you just watch!

There's no guarantee DDR3 will be ready and economically viable by any point in 2007. Better than to be stuck with regular DDR that far down the line. It may be hard to see but DDR2 will surpass DDR in price/performance as well as absolute performance. It's just a matter of time.

Yeppers, I had the rig in my sig since last Xmas (12-04), I figure i will upgrade it to X2 and Next Gen AGP (G70) after Xmas when prices drop (02-06), and then ride that out untill Summer (05-07). Quite a nice 30 month ride i have planned for my S939 mobo, and i am only 7 months into it!!!! :) :) :)

For reasons mentioned (DDR3 will be expensive, etc at launch) they will move to DDR2. One being decreased DDR production and higher prices in the near future and higher DDR2 performance.

VR-Zone has the newest roadmaps up today. 2007 is supposed to bring ddr3 (though only if viable, no doubt) and many other improvements, but the socket WILL NOT CHANGE. I believe M2 should last at least as long as 939 and they are going to make it compatible with all things they plan on adding for at least a few years after it is introduced. Id say this goes for all the next generation of sockets.
