Witnesses reported seeing the plane explode before it crashed, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.
Move along! Nothing to see here! Happens all the time!
We will have to wait and see. Talk to any FAA or NTSB investigator they will tell you there is always a witness that reports flames or an explosion.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this. I highly doubt contaminiated fuel. The planes went down 100 miles form the airport. Typically when weather effects a jet aircraft it is usually on takeoff and landing where it is most susceptible. Had the fuel been a problem, there would have been plenty of time to radio and the plane can still be controlled wihtout engines running.
from the article:
However, Interfax quoted a Russian security source who said one of the planes, the Tu-154, transmitted a signal indicating a hijacking was under way before the plane crashed.
The source also told Interfax a criminal investigation has been opened in the case after an air traffic controller reported receiving information that an attack had been made on the crew of the second airliner.
how does one signal hijacking? is it a single distress button or is it a verbal command given? if its just a button type signal, im wondering if pilots crashing often panic and sort of over-react and push anything. although, i would imagine they are more disciplined than i would be to just start jamming buttons but being faced with imminent death is more than i can relate to.
if it was being hijacked, i imagine that the intent was not to crash it into the ground and that it was either the pilots "ok, crash it or run the risk of more damage than this plane of people" or just ill-prepared hijackers.
but, as stated, only time will tell.
