If you want to use it as a hotspot on an unlimited data plan, get an Android phone you can root.

I want to use the iPhone as a hotspot, but I read that its a lot harder than it is on Android (which has native tethering [certain ROMs have work arounds for it while iPhones don't])

Well, yah it is impossible now on the 5s as it lacks a jailbreak.

Here's what I did:

Sold my Verizon Unlimited line for $300
Opened up an unlimited talk/text/data with T-Mobile for $70 a month.
Got an iPhone 5s. Free tethering up to 1.5gbs. Anything past that I use my university's VPN and I can get past the tethering block or use a browser user agent changer and it will work.

This month I've used about 80gbs of data. (New phone syncing and Battlefield 4 preload)

You can only tether using FoxFi or root. Android only.
You are out of luck with iOS.

How do you do that with unlimited data?

NM just realized you are giving up unlimited data to get iPhone.....

So yeah you can tether with anything you want but limited data usage.

I hope the OP understands the tethering restrictions on unlimited data users.

Yeah, but you see. I live in the era of everyone owning an iPhone.
:/

Unless a good phone comes to Verizon that has a good resale value, I'm going for a iphone

I thought Android dominates market share...

Obviously you have your heart set on the iPhone anyway, but resale value is the last of your worries. Using your logic, then shouldn't you be buying a used Android phone for cheap and keep unlimited data instead? My RAZR M was only $120 mint and the value has not dropped. All phones end up worth a fraction of the original price anyway.

Its priceless if iPhone makes you happier or maybe even play the mating game better. So don't worry about a few $ difference of resale price.

Yea but his point was you can't tether with unlimited data on the iPhone so why not take the upgrade?
There will be a jailbreak for iOS 7 soon. And there's a way to torrent without jailbreaking

I've used like up to 30 gbs in certain months. I doubt they have a restriction.

See my heart says Android. But there won't be and be any Nexus phones coming out to Verizon (or with CDMA radios) which makes me sad. :(

My brain says iPhone because since everyone has one. I find them to be pretty cool. I've never really had an iOS device except for a iPod I had, but it doesn't do much justice. I'm actually looking around to see if I can find an iPhone 5 for around 400 bucks.

None on Verizon or T-Mobile.
Yup

So this next question is more opinion based.

I'm going off to college next year so should I just upgrade and get rid of my unlimited data or pay full price and keep it? The only reason I would keep my unlimited data is to torrent TV shows and movies.

you should definitely do whatever is necessary to keep unlimited data. i tether all the time, easily using 30gb a month. if i was actually being charged for that amount of data it would probably be a couple hundred dollars a month. so many places dont have wifi (or good wifi), it really comes in handy. if you want a good new phone, the maxx is only 500 now

Verizon official stance is no tethering on unlimited data. You need to be on Mobile Share plan which is capped if you want to tether. If you're tethering on the unlimited plan, you're violating their ToS.

As for iOS7 JB, there's no ETA. How is that JB working out for AppleTV3 owners?

I fully expect an iOS 7 jailbreak eventually, the question is if A7 devices will get an untethered jailbreak. They built a lot of security into that SoC. A jailbreak is certainly not guaranteed especially any time soon.

But you are right you can torrent without jailbreak so as long as you don't mind not tethering you could just do it all on the phone.

Can't you get an iPhone for like 650?

Tethered jailbreak is fine.

Wrong. Unlimited Verizon subscribers are not allowed to tether unless you pay extra. You can either root, jailbreak, or FoxFi. By the time jailbreak is out for 5S you will be eyeing the 6.
I can torrent without jailbreaking
