Two printers won't work together on USB hub

I have two printers (B&W laser + color inkjet) and until today, they've each been given its own USB port. I put them together on one USB hub and they refuse to work together. Either printer works through the hub, but if both printers are plugged into the hub from the same port, neither works.

Why?

I see this often. Is this a powered hub? If not it probably needs to be.

Not all hubs are created equal. Cheap hubs are cheap garbage. Stick to brand names.

Worse comes to worse plug one into the hub and plug one in direct. Plug something else into the hub to free a jack.
