Two PC's behind router cannot see each other. WinXP Pro, Simple File Sharing enabled

Using WinXP Pro:

Simple File Sharing is enabled, and both PC's are behind a router with DHCP-assigned IP addresses. Why can't they see each other? This particular desktop can't even see itself on the network.
 
Yeah. It turns out that I had to enable both Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing. I don't know why they were disabled.
