One for everyone and one just for the ladies

1. I have dandruff always have. Does anyone know anyway to manage it without seeing a dermatologist? Head and Shoulders yeah yeah yeah. I want a better solution. Ive gone that route and its kinda hit and miss.

2. Ladies, do you or have you dated a guy with Dandruff. If so was it a turn off at all and if it was how much so?

If head and shoulders isn't working then try another shampoo.

Here is what wikipedia has to say on the subject.

Dandruff
[1] is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. Dandruff should not be confused with a simple dry scalp. As skin cells die a small amount of flaking is normal; about 487,000 cells/cm2 get released normally after detergent treatment.[2] Some people, however, experience an unusually large amount of flaking either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, up to 800,000 cells/cm2, which can also be accompanied by redness and irritation. Most cases of dandruff can be easily treated with specialized shampoos. There is, however, no true cure.

The last head and shoulders I bought worked tremendously well for me. I hardly ever get a single spec with it. The current head and shoulders, which looks almost the same, I still get a decent amount sometimes. Although it seems to help if I really massage it in my scalp while I shampoo.

I had luck when I use to get it really badly with T/Gel extra strength. The stuff may knock you out with how bad it smells though.

How often do you wash your hair and do you have oily skin?

Stripping out that excess oil will get rid of common dandruff. Just get a shampoo for oily hair, then wash it twice during your daily shower...don't use any creme rinses or moisturizers.

Oily skin, not dry skin, is the cause of dandruff.

It just smells like pet shampoo or something to me. Not the best scent, but not really offensive.

That's where I'd go. Head and Shoulders works fine for me, but T-Gel is pretty much the next step before an Rx shampoo.

I was under the impression everyone has some dandruff, so I'd imagine that yes, women date men with dandruff.

once a day on average, sometimes every 2 days. Its not excessively oily.

Oily skin usually goes with dandruff, I think. Not really oily hair. That goes with being Greek or Italian.

You might try just using soap. Or alternate soap and head and shoulders. Real soap; no moisturizers or other crap. The stuff that's basically a brick of dish soap. Works good for acne, too (it took me a long to realize that 'ance cleansers' or whatever just agitate the shit. Stripping the oils with plain-ass unmedicated soap always worked better).

I've tried Nizoral (2% harder stuff) and Head & Shoulders... both were useless.

I've also tried the "natural" approach, the one about how you're scalp is shedding too much because of harsh chemicals and too frequent shampooing. This entailed washing with conditioner only and using "green" shampoos that were supposed to use mostly natural ingredients. Fail again...

Then I lost enough hair that I felt I had to shave it all, so I did. No more dandruff problems -- at least you can't see it anymore with no dark colored hair to accent the white flakes.

I go back and forth between Head 'n' Shoulders and Selson Blue...

one odd thing is ever since i started my "diet" my dandruff has reduced..

Experiment with washing it twice during your daily shower. Strip away the skin oils that may irritate the skin, added benefit of manually exfoliating. Rule out the simple things first.

Give it two weeks.

You'll notice that all the dandruff shampoos have the "rinse, lather, repeat" instruction.

Also a funny story about most recommending washing ones hair a ton... that is also a good way to cause this particular issue.
Most hair products are much harsher on ones scalp then they still admit to. Its a nice cycle get something to cure something that it can actually can cause.

The final solution that worked was to just not wash it as often. Hint the oily hair and scalp are a product of the oils being produced in excess due to them being constantly stripped away. Once either washing it less, with harsh products, or using milder shampoo it stops.

I mostly get dandruff in the winter months, I guess it's because the lack of moisture in the air. Dandruff shampoo works about 50% of the time for me.

This. I have oily skin. I shower twice daily on average. I find if I keep my hair short, which is easy because I'm in the Army, it helps too.

I alternate between shampoos that contain Salicylic acid and pyrithione zinc. I use primarily Selsun Blue.
