two network connections at the same time?

I use windows media center for my local TV. My pc (windows 7) and an HD homerun Dual are both connected to my asus router and my pc communicates with the tv tuner through the network. I DO NOT have internet. This setup works fine although when I want to connect to the internet I use my iPhone wireless hotspot. I have a wireless adapter hooked up to my pc as well. So whenever I connect to the iphone via the wireless adapter my pc says both connections are active although neither work.
It says the main Ethernet connection (local area connection, to the router) is connected, no internet. Then it says my wireless connection is connected, with internet. Although i cannot access the internet and also windows media center cannot communicate with the tv tuner.

The only way I have got either to work is to disable one or the other. If I disable the local area connection then the internet works. If I disable the wireless then the tv works again. Why can they not work together? I have tried "sharing" the wireless connection with the local area connection and in this case the internet will work but the tv tuner still will not work unless i disable the wireless connection.

is there a way to allow them both to work because switching back and forth is annoying and also cannot access internet while watching tv so if I'm on the internet while something is scheduled to record it doesnt get recorded.

Computers usually have a lower metric for wired LAN connections vs wireless. Easiest way is to assign your wired LAN a static IP address outside DHCP range of your asus router and don't fill in the default gateway.

Another option would be a cradlepoint wireless router that has Wireless as WAN to replace the asus router. This would give your network internet. Assuming that your iphone connection has a nice big data plan or unlimited?

Change your dhcp server settings in the asus to not provide a default gateway if possible. (it's not a gateway in your setup)

Otherwise configure static addressing without a default gateway for the ethernet adapter on the computer.

The default gateway is the address a host will send all traffic not destined for the local lan to.
