Two more weeks and then I'm leaving

I've visited Green Bank several times. The first time I visited, I was able to view the original large dish -- then, oh well, it crashed.

I'm here! 😀

The observatory and surrounding area are in a "quiet zone" - basically all RF traffic
is restricted as much as possible, so cell phones are completely out. In fact, you
can't drive a gasoline powered vehicle within two miles of the main radio antennae
due to the RF signals from the ignition! :Q Pretty restrictive. Needless to
say, I'll get to do some walking and biking to get up close. 🙂

The computer lab I'm typing this from is in an RF-shielded room,
literally, a vault of sorts. I had to pass through an airlock of sorts
with shielded walls and doors. The room has a heavily copper foiled ceiling - I'll
see about getting pictures for you. Interesting place so far.

The conference doesn't actually start until later on tomorrow.

Supposedly, there's going to be a webcast available of the conference at the following URL:

mms:\\videostream.ad.nrao.edu\sara

Later!

See if you can recruit any of your fellow attendees. 😉 🙂 😀

What is the start time of the streaming video?

I don't know when the streaming-video actually starts, but the conference is scheduled to begin tomorrow(Sunday) evening with the bulk of it going on from about 9a to 6pm on Monday and Tuesday. If I can get more details I'll pass 'em along.

I took a walk with my friend Jim earlier this afternoon and saw the 40' dish that the SARA group has access to... the dish was impressive, the receivers/electronics were not. Seemed like something out a 1960's era movie - no kidding! :Q I'll get some pics before it's over. I'm told it's a whole different setup with the 360'(yes, 360 FEET) diameter dish - the pride of the NRAO site. There, the electronics are much more up-to-date. Again, once I have pics and a place to host them, I'll let you know.

I don't know if I'll be able to recruit anyone, though I suspect the "TA SETI" license plate will get a few smiles. 🙂 I'm looking forward to speaking with Dr. Paul Shuch of The Seti League - according to my friend Jim, Paul flies in with his own small plane to the conference each year. 🙂 I guess there's a little bit of friction between the "SETI" people and the other radio-astronomers interested in "less abstract" projects. Nothing overtly hostile or anything.. just a little tension, so far as I can tell. It's kind of like kids not playing well together.. at least that's my impression of it so far. Nevertheless, I'm not letting it deter me from learning all I can while here and hopefully meeting some new potential friends. 😉
